Concert Band - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1408466 Composed by Margaret Ada Sutherland. Arranged by John Ivor Holland. 20th Century,Classical,Folk. 84 pages. John Ivor Holland #991057. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1408466). Margaret Sutherland was one of the most innovative and influential Australian composers. In the first half of the twentieth century, her desire to be both serious composer and mother was atypical, and she faced significant challenges – public and private – in blending these roles. Against the backdrop of an unhappy and unsupportive marriage and a society not yet ready to accept her creative ambitions and strong views on Australia’s musical development, she remained admirably steadfast in pursuing her goals. Sutherland created over two hundred compositions, ceaselessly campaigned on behalf of Australian music and musicians, and led the initial push to construct what is now Arts Centre Melbourne. In her attempts to redefine beauty in music she used idiosyncratic musical language, being at the mercy of ‘sound pictures’ and ‘floating ideas’. Not much is known about this particular piece, 'Bush Ballad', save that its opening folk-like melody and sinewy variations on it are rather wonderful and very indicative of Sutherland's style - certain portions of the score seemed to be missing, and there were several handwritten corrections, so a certain amount of reconstruction and editing has been necessary to present this arrangement for full band.

Score and parts. 76 pages. BJE Music #4579953. Published by BJE Music (A0.750900). Originally a vocal duet entitled 'The Battle Eve' was composed by Theo Bonheur with lyrics written by GW Southey. The song had been written for performances by bass and tenor vocal duet. The song begins: Dark the shades of night are growing, keen and chill the wind is blowing, bright the watchfire lights are glowing, 'Tis the battle eve…The piece appears to have been composed in the early 1890s with the first recorded performance at the Athenaeum in Melbourne (Australia) in May 1893. ‘The Battle Eve’ was very popular during the First World War period with many performances at many concerts related to the war effort in Australia. This included patriotic concerts held across Australia during 1914. The first of these was a patriotic concert held at the School of Arts, South Grafton, New South Wales, on Tuesday 1 September 1914. Miss Eva Beatson performed the song with proceeds from the evening totaling 52 pounds. Concert band - Grade 4 - Digital Download SKU: IZ.CBS173-S Composed by Arthur J. Michaels. Pathways Series. Score. 15 pages. Imagine Music - Digital #CBS173-S. Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.CBS173-S). 9 x 12 in inches.Escapade in Swing is a Grade 4 concert band piece with a duration of about 3:45. Jazz swing style began in the United States in the 1930s. It was America's favorite popular music form from about 1935 to 1945. This piece is a tribute to that style. Escapade in Swing begins in a moderate, laid-back feel with an ample sprinkling of cool. The piece then changes to a much faster Lively, Driving Swing tempo. A four-measure transition separates the coolness of the first part from the heat of the second part. The second part includes 2-measure written solos for clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, and euphonium. Some of these solos are cued in other instruments. Directors can use discretion in assigning the solos: Solo passages can be played as written or ad-libbed, and each written solo can be assigned as a section soli.Escapade in Swing provides ample opportunities to teach lessons in jazz style, jazz notation and techniques, maintaining a steady tempo, intonation, soli and ensemble playing, and improvisation. Be sure to begin and maintain (don't rush!) the initial tempo of M.M.=108. Establishing this tempo best ensures pleasing contrast with the faster section, beginning at measure 32.This exciting piece makes an excellent concert closer, and it will be well-received by toe-tapping players and by toetapping audiences.Relight this piece's sizzle with an encore! Strike up a searing finish by taking it from measure 78 with the repeat!

Https://www.michaelbarreraflute.com/shop/p/mephisto-waltz1-band-scoreTwo Episodes from Lenau’s Faust | Mephisto Waltz No. 1Program NotesFranz Liszt’s first Mephisto Waltz is a programmatic work based on an episode from Nikolaus Lenau’s 1836 verse drama Faust.  The program note that appears in the original printed score is noted here:There is a wedding feast in progress in the village inn, with music, dancing, carousing.  Mephistopheles and Faust pass by, and Mephistopheles induces Faust to enter and take part in the festivities.  Mephistopheles snatches the fiddle from the hands of a lethargic fiddler and draws from it indescribably seductive and intoxicating strains.  The amorous Faust whirls about with a full-blooded village beauty in a wild dance; they waltz in mad abandon out of the room, into the open, away into the woods.  The sounds of the fiddle grow softer and softer, and the nightingale warbled his love-laden song. Mephisto Waltz No. 1 is paired with a work preceding it, Midnight Procession (Der Nächtliche Zug), however this piece is not as widely performed.  Liszt later transcribed the waltz into a piano duet and a virtuosic solo piano work.  Each of these versions were written around the same time, roughly 1859-62.  The orchestral version also has an alternate ending, which is softer and fades away.  This arrangement features both endings. This work was then followed by three more Mephisto Waltzes.  No. 2 was also written as both an orchestral and piano work, while Nos. 3 and 4 were for piano only.  Of the four, the first is the most popular, although the third is also praised as highly musically. InstrumentationWritten for Wind Ensemble of any size (Number indicates how many parts - some parts include divisi)1 Piccolo (doubles Flute 3)                                              2 Flutes2 Oboes2 Bassoons1 Clarinet (E flat)3 Clarinets (B flat)1 Bass Clarinet (B flat)1 Contrabass Clarinet (B flat)2 Alto Saxophones1 Tenor Saxophone1 Baritone Saxophone3 Trumpets (B flat)4 Horns (F)2 Trombones1 Bass Trombone1 Euphonium1 Tuba1 String BassTimpaniMarimbaCymbalTriangle.

Concert Band - Digital Download SKU: A0.733048 Composed by Edwin Franko Goldman. Arranged by Marc Oliver. Contemporary. Score and parts. 76 pages. Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings #2347531. Published by Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings (A0.733048). Throughout the late 19th Century and well into the 20th Century, there have been many patriotic marches written for band (and later transcribed for orchestra) by the composers of the day. The most famous, of course, is John Philip Sousa's The Stars and Stripes Forever, written in 1897, and is now the National March of the United States of America. Other patriotic marches include National Emblem, Americans We and Liberty Bell. Still another patriotic march is The Chimes of Liberty, written by Edwin Franko Goldman in 1922. It is possible that Goldman wrote this march to take advantage of the lyrics of My Country tis of Thee; where we let freedom ring. And what rings better than bells and chimes? The chimes are definitely featured in the second half of the march. The march also includes a very interesting piccolo obbligato.
