Concert Band - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1408466 Composed by Margaret Ada Sutherland. Arranged by John Ivor Holland. 20th Century,Classical,Folk. 84 pages. John Ivor Holland #991057. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1408466). Margaret Sutherland was one of the most innovative and influential Australian composers. In the first half of the twentieth century, her desire to be both serious composer and mother was atypical, and she faced significant challenges – public and private – in blending these roles. Against the backdrop of an unhappy and unsupportive marriage and a society not yet ready to accept her creative ambitions and strong views on Australia’s musical development, she remained admirably steadfast in pursuing her goals. Sutherland created over two hundred compositions, ceaselessly campaigned on behalf of Australian music and musicians, and led the initial push to construct what is now Arts Centre Melbourne. In her attempts to redefine beauty in music she used idiosyncratic musical language, being at the mercy of ‘sound pictures’ and ‘floating ideas’. Not much is known about this particular piece, 'Bush Ballad', save that its opening folk-like melody and sinewy variations on it are rather wonderful and very indicative of Sutherland's style - certain portions of the score seemed to be missing, and there were several handwritten corrections, so a certain amount of reconstruction and editing has been necessary to present this arrangement for full band.

Concert Band - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.722753 Composed by John Gross Barnard. Arranged by Jari A. Villanueva. Contemporary,Folk,Romantic Period,Spiritual. Score and parts. 56 pages. JV MUSIC #3423151. Published by JV MUSIC (A0.722753). Abraham Lincoln Funeral March for Concert BandBy John Gross Barnard Orchestrated by Jari Villanueva This funeral march written by John Gross Barnard was performed by the United States Marine Band during the funeral procession from the Executive Mansion to the Capitol for Abraham Lincoln on April 19, 1865. The march is titled: Funeral March in Memory of the Abraham Lincoln: Played at the Obsequies of the President of the United States by the US Marine Band. The funeral march follows the standard format of dirges of the time (most notable are Webster’s Funeral March, Chopin’s Funeral March and March in Saul by Handel) written in minor keys (considered somber) and divided into eight measure phrases which makes it easy for the funeral cadence to be played underneath. This funeral march, like most written during this time, has a transition to a major key (happier sounding). This march goes to the relative major (D minor to D major) key. Since no parts are extant from the US Band, I was asked to score the march for a modern symphonic band. I hoped to capture the somber drum beat and employed a chime to replicate the bells that tolled along the funeral route.Full Score Piccolo Flutes 1-2 Oboes 1-2 Bassoon 1-2 Eb Clarinet3 Bb ClarinetsAlto ClarinetBass ClarinetAlto Saxophone 1-2Tenor SaxophoneBaritone Saxophone 3 Cornets 2 Trumpets 4 Horns in F3 TrombonesEuphonium (Baritone TC)TubaString BassTimpaniPercussionChimesA retired member of the United States Air Force Band where he served on the Music Production staff (as well as a trumpeter and bugler) and student of Bill Holcombe, Jari Villanueva continues writing for different ensembles. Concert Band - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1463453 Composed by Franz Liszt. Arranged by Michael Barrera. 19th Century,Classical,Romantic Period. 42 pages. Michael Barrera #1042149. Published by Michael Barrera (A0.1463453). Https://www.michaelbarreraflute.com/shop/p/mephisto-waltz1-band-scoreTwo Episodes from Lenau’s Faust | Mephisto Waltz No. 1Program NotesFranz Liszt’s first Mephisto Waltz is a programmatic work based on an episode from Nikolaus Lenau’s 1836 verse drama Faust.  The program note that appears in the original printed score is noted here:There is a wedding feast in progress in the village inn, with music, dancing, carousing.  Mephistopheles and Faust pass by, and Mephistopheles induces Faust to enter and take part in the festivities.  Mephistopheles snatches the fiddle from the hands of a lethargic fiddler and draws from it indescribably seductive and intoxicating strains.  The amorous Faust whirls about with a full-blooded village beauty in a wild dance; they waltz in mad abandon out of the room, into the open, away into the woods.  The sounds of the fiddle grow softer and softer, and the nightingale warbled his love-laden song. Mephisto Waltz No. 1 is paired with a work preceding it, Midnight Procession (Der Nächtliche Zug), however this piece is not as widely performed.  Liszt later transcribed the waltz into a piano duet and a virtuosic solo piano work.  Each of these versions were written around the same time, roughly 1859-62.  The orchestral version also has an alternate ending, which is softer and fades away.  This arrangement features both endings. This work was then followed by three more Mephisto Waltzes.  No. 2 was also written as both an orchestral and piano work, while Nos. 3 and 4 were for piano only.  Of the four, the first is the most popular, although the third is also praised as highly musically. InstrumentationWritten for Wind Ensemble of any size (Number indicates how many parts - some parts include divisi)1 Piccolo (doubles Flute 3)                                              2 Flutes2 Oboes2 Bassoons1 Clarinet (E flat)3 Clarinets (B flat)1 Bass Clarinet (B flat)1 Contrabass Clarinet (B flat)2 Alto Saxophones1 Tenor Saxophone1 Baritone Saxophone3 Trumpets (B flat)4 Horns (F)2 Trombones1 Bass Trombone1 Euphonium1 Tuba1 String BassTimpaniMarimbaCymbalTriangle.

Concert Band - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1490853 Composed by Brian Ackley. March. 29 pages. Brian P. Ackley #1067638. Published by Brian P. Ackley (A0.1490853). Noble and stately, Processional March is written for your second year beginning Band.  The elements of this piece include dynamic contrasts, varying articulations, and a new time & key signature that is often not seen in first year literature, while maintaining an appropriate range for your students—for reference, the clarinets are under the break, with their highest note being the 3rd line Bb and the lowest being the B-natural below the staff.  Processional March is written in 2/4, with the first half of the piece in Eb and the second in Bb. With a tempo marking of Moderato {quarter note = 108}, this march comes in under 3 minutes, making this piece an attainable piece to learn for any upcoming concert. The rhythmic structure of this piece is strict quarter and 8th note rhythms for all wind instruments. The snare drum part also has the same rhythmic structure, but also includes 9-stroke rolls, flams, flam-taps and paired 8th-two 16th rhythms. The percussion section has only four parts–Crash Cymbals, Snare/Bass Drum and Glockenspiel—making this ideal for any sized percussion section.Processional March follows an |:AA:|-B-C form. Throughout the piece, each instrument visits the harmonic structure beneath the melody, as well as playing the melodies featured in the different sections. Part-wise, all of the wind instruments are written in a comfortable range and have unison parts, with the flutes, clarinets and & trumpets having certain measures divided into two parts, still maintaining unison rhythms.  The flutes are divided specifically into Flute 1 and Flute 2/Oboe, which is ideal if you do not have an oboe in your beginning band.  Students will enjoy this straight forward march and directors will find rehearsing it to be enjoyable and allows for the teaching of newer techniques and skills to advance their band’s level of playing!
