Shades of Eltham (Eltham Concert Band - 35 Years of Music) - Concert Band Version

Dedicated to Ern and Beattie Shade for their contribution to the Eltham Concert Band. The title of this piece is a play on words, of course, indicating both the Shades themselves and the various shades or moods of the music or even perhaps, the shady bushland setting of the area itself. I composed this piece with a few simple ideas in mind. The letters E and A in the word Eltham suggested to me an interval of a fourth, or the other way around, an interval of a fifth – which are both used in many of entries of the themes and musical motifs throughout the work – especially the brass. There are several variations and counter melodies within the work: a bright two-four march-like theme, probably the Main theme, and a variation of this theme in slower three-four time in a minor key with two counter melodies - representing a gentler contrasting mood. On occasions, two or even three themes play simultaneously. A bridging passage in four-four occurs about the two thirds into the composition leading up to a restatement of the main theme. The final climax or Coda actually has both three four melody against the two-four one resolving in the last few bars in a dramatic way.

I hope you enjoy my musical tribute to the Shades. The MP3 was recorded with NotePerformer.

Composed by Elizabeth Raum. Contemporary. Score and parts. 58 pages. Elizabeth Raum #38933. Published by Elizabeth Raum (A0.1030882).

This Fanfare is meant to commemorate the Centenary of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan with the events of the first 100 years being represented as echoes of fanfares. The piece begins with a clarion call from the brass, the fanfares of the present culminating in the Maestoso. Then the music becomes more distant, fanfares of the past played by woodwinds and muted brass. The transition brings us back to the present with the return to the full band’s salute to Saskatchewan’s Centennial.

CLARINET CONCERT CONCERTINO FOR WIND BAND

I don’t normally enter long descriptions of my arrangements, nothing worse than seeing that little sign on the bottom right saying ‘see more’, however this piece has a rather interesting story that I’d like to share with you!

It was maybe 8 or 9 years ago that I helped in the library of the Band Of The Guards Association, a group of musicians who were all members of the Household Division Bands
in London, that is to say the Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish, Welsh, Life Guards and Blues & Royals bands, chiefly known the world over for Changing The Guard at Buckingham Palace and many other ceremonial occasions.

The Band Of The Guards Association were privileged to rehearse at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, home of the famous Chelsea Pensioners, renowned for their Redcoats and medals as veterans of the British Army. Our library of music for the band at the time was held in an air raid shelter deep in the cellars underneath the labyrinthine corridors of the old building built by Sir Christopher Wren back in the 1680’s.

When I say ‘air raid shelter’, that is exactly what it was like! Can’t go into too much detail, but suffice it to say that it was like being transported back in time!

But this is where the library was kept, complete with dusty shelves, blackout warnings, obsolete bulb replacements and tunnels to the Thames!

The man in charge of the library was Mr.Gordon ‘Joe’ Stafford, former Solo Clarinet with HM Band Of The Welsh Guards (ret’d), a fine player of that instrument in his day, and revered as such even now.

About 8 years ago, our ‘underground ‘ library was deemed a fire hazard, and we were ‘invited’ to move it elsewhere.

As we had our practice room nearby in the Chelsea Hospital, we decided to relocate the whole library there, shelving being built and constructed by enthusiastic band members.

Joe Stafford and myself were not particularly enthusiastic about this, but it had to be done. Having looked at the enormous amount of music to be moved, we thought about ditching some of the scores which would never be played again, for instance selections of musicals long forgotten, scores with multiple missing parts etc.

Lots of that music went to local music organisations simply for sight reading purposes, and the more complete versions went to bands and orchestras to bolster their stock of scores.

After the laborious sorting out in the air raid shelter, Joe and I had the unenviable task of discarding the scores and parts that were incomplete, defaced, or just basically useless.

It was an arbitrary case of ‘keep or throw’, and at the time we were doing this, Joe was desperate for a pint in the bar!

I agreed, and was anyway on my last batch of throwaways when I found a piece titled ‘Clarinet Concerto’, by A.E.Williams.

Written in pencil, with ancient sellotape, and signed by all the people who played it many years ago, including the Soloist and composer, I thought that that should not be binned, so I kept it!

Joe Stafford suggested that I should ‘get it out there’ , so I have. Incidentally it has a cracking Cadenza towards the end, it was a bit smudged in the original score, but I’ve filled in the gaps!!

This would be an ideal addition to the band repertoire for Clarinet!

Composed by Pasquale Anfossi (Taggia 1727 - Rome 1797). Arranged by Fabrizio Brezzo. Baroque. Score and parts. 19 pages. Fabrizio Brezzo #4633087. Published by Fabrizio Brezzo (A0.896391).

Pasquale Anfossi (5 April 1727 – February 1797) was an Italian opera composer. Born in Taggia, Liguria, he studied with Niccolò Piccinni and Antonio Sacchini, and worked mainly in London, Venice and Rome.

He wrote more than 80 operas, both opera seria and opera buffa, although he concentrated on church music, especially oratorios, during his last years. Anfossi died in Rome in 1797.

As an operatic composer, Anfossi remained forgotten for a long time, despite his great popularity with his contemporaries, because his works were overshadowed by those of Salieri, Rossini and Mozart. Nevertheless, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe staged Anfossi's farsetta La maga Circe (Circe, the Sorceress) in his role as the theatre director of Weimar. He adapted the libretto with Christian August Vulpius and also made plans for a continuation, which never came to bear.

Only in the last 20 years has Anfossi's work been appreciated anew, through diverse productions such as Giuseppe riconosciuto. His work was featured at the 2005 Salzburg Summer Festival.

Fabrizio Brezzo, this arranger, lives in Taggia, the town where Anfossi was born.

In the second half of this symphony, you can hear the theme that Mozart used, 9 years later, for his Confutatis maledictis of the requiem mass.

Composed by David M. Stewart. March. Score and Parts. 92 pages. DMStewart Music #835071. Published by DMStewart Music (A0.1239680).

This piece, The Palatka Port March, is intended to depict a little of the sense of life in the early years of Florida on the St. John’s River. It was once a target for ships venturing out to find the New World. It has been used to ferry barges and livestock. Some simply used it for sailing and transportation throughout the years, and some to catch fish to provide for themselves. The life on this river has been diverse, yet fulfilling over the years and will continue to be so in the future.

The melodies in this piece were taken from the shape of the St. Johns River from its upper point in Jacksonville, to where our part of the story ends in Palatka. Notice the falling and rising 8th note runs at the beginning, this represents the rise and the fall of the river as it enters Jacksonville from the Atlantic Ocean. The first strain is a linear, yet very regal melody where the heavy beats follow the contour of the river as it runs south. Here you can picture the ships coming from Europe across the ocean and the excitement they felt when they reached it. The second strain is more playful and represents the life that the river has provided for people for centuries. The Trio represents the calmness and civility when Palatka was discovered, and the happiness the settlers must have felt knowing they had found their perfect place to call home. The break strain represents the hard work and efforts that were put forth to secure the land and build a community. There would have been many triumphs and many successes, but the journey would have not been easy. The final strain is the culmination of the piece. This is the celebration and the feeling of personal nobility that all of the settlers felt after taking a river and dirt and building a city.

I hope you enjoy, The Palatka Port March!

Composed by Juan de Arriaga. Arranged by Joel Jacklich (ASCAP). Classical. Score and parts. 32 pages. Joel Jacklich #3377517. Published by Joel Jacklich (A0.723125).

PROGRAM NOTE:  Mitch Sturman, director of the Wilson Junior High School Warrior Band in El Centro, California, has been  commissioning works, both new works and modern arrangements of old works, for nine years for an annual Concert  of Premieres each May.  He commissioned me to arrange this military march by Juan de Arriaga for his 9th Annual  Concert of Premieres for the 2015-2016 Academic year.

Juan Crisóstomo Jacobo Antonio de Arriaga y Balzola (January 27, 1806 – January 17, 1826) was a Spanish Basque  composer. He was nicknamed the Spanish Mozart after he died, because, like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, he was both  a child prodigy and an accomplished composer who died young. They also shared the same first and second baptismal  names; and they shared the same birthday, January 27 (fifty years apart).

The Marcha Militar was written in 1820 when Arriaga was 14 years old.  The original is scored for requinto (a small, 3/4-size guitar tuned in F, a fourth above the normal quitar), piccolo in D,  two clarinets in B-flat, two small trumpets in B-flat, two large trumpets in B-flat, two bassoons in B-flat, serpent in  A-flat, trombone in B-flat, triangle, chimes, cymbals, side drum, and bass drum.  I have arranged the piece for a modern band of piccolo, flute, oboe, three clarinets in B-flat, bass clarinet in B-flat,  alto sax in E-flat, tenor sax in B-flat, bari sax in E-flat , bassoon, French horn in F, three trumpets in B-flat, baritone  horn (with parts for both bass clef and transposing B-flat treble clef),trombone, tuba, triangle, snare drum, cymblas,  bass drum, and glockenspiel.  As this arrangement was originally meant for a junior high school band, some notes may cause range problems for  young, less experienced players.  I have indicated these notes with smaller noteheads in parenthesis. While these  parenthetical notes are the preferred notes, and should be played if possible, it is assumed the regular-sized note is  probably the one which will probably need to be played.

Composed by Kyle Wernke. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 425 pages. Kyle Wernke Publishing #2120113. Published by Kyle Wernke Publishing (A0.1023994).

Formations, is a celebration of the cosmos; a celebration of the tiniest of particles to the largest galaxies and everything in between. Since I was a child I've looked up at the sky and seen a world full of wonder, beauty, and mystery. The same wonder that filled my heart when I was in elementary school still takes hold when I look up now, decades later. I chose the formation of things for a specific reason. When I was a kid I had a habit of asking my parents where everything came from. It wasn't enough that a star was there, I needed to know how it got there and if possible why it was there. As I grew up I developed an immense appetite for almost all things science and history and with that came some of the answers I needed. The reality of how these things came to be was so much more interesting and astounding than my imagination that all these years later I am still captivated by the idea of an exploding star or the Big Bang. So lets take a journey, you and I. First we'll see the death of an immense star and watch as its own gravity rips it apart and forms a black hole. We'll see it feed on matter and light around it until it too finally dies. Next we'll go back 13.7 billion years and watch as tiny particles dance in and out of existence in the endless nothingness that once was. We'll see one of these tiny bits expand in an instant and give rise to everything that ever has been or will be. Watch hydrogen form and gravity pull it into the first stars. Those stars will form galaxies and we'll see glimpses of the Universe as it exists now. Finally, we will travel to the end of time, a trillion years or more into the future. There we will witness the dissipation of the galaxies, the death of stars, and the final moments as even tiny electrons are pulled apart into the nothing from which we all came. Parts of this piece are violent, but we will see that at the end of time, the formation of nothing is just as beautiful as the formation of a star. Everything has its time and everything ends. Premiered by the Hartt Wind Ensemble - Glen Adsit, Conductor.

My father enjoyed singing, particularly when the family went on road trips. One of our favorite songs that he sang was The
Far North Land. Several years ago, my sister recorded our father singing this song for use on the soundtrack of one of her
movies. Years later I transcribed the song from that recording and used it as the foundation for this piece. My aunts tell me
they recall my father singing this song when he was a boy growing up in Minnesota, and that they referred to it as Fletch's
song. It was only while working on this piece that I discovered that Duncan, Clear Water and Bear Skin are actual lakes in
the border lakes region where Minnesota meets Canada.
The original arrangement, for string quartet, was premiered by the OdeonQuartet on October 21, 2003, at Seattle's Town

A mariachi arrangement of the famous Colombian song El Camino de la Vida, composed by Héctor Ochoa Cárdenas in 1983 and acclaimed during the next18-20 years as the most beautiful Colombian song of the 20th century and of all times. The song has been studied in deep to understand its appeal to the listener, both finding musical relations to Liszt, Chopin and Bizet and referring to the nostalgia by some listeners for a time which has passed (including the Catholic way of life and principles in the last 40 or 50 years).
Translation of the text is given in the videoscore.

Set Free to go Home was composed in the fall of 2019. It was commissioned by Dr. Kristen Tjornehoj, Conductor of the University of Wisconsin at River Falls Symphony Band in remembrance of Kaye Bird, who passed away in 2016 as a resident of River Falls and a member of the community for several years. It is agrade 3 band piece with a duration of five minutes. It is published by Musica Nova USA and availableon sheetmusicplus.com and jwpepper.com.

Performance Notes: Set Free to go Home was composed with flexible instrumentation in mind. There are several instruments listed in the score that would enhance the piece (such as harp, oboes, double bass, ect.) but are not necessary to convey a successful performance. For example, if there are not five percussionists available, the piece may be played by less performers with the use of a drumkit, with one person playing two or more parts. This composition can sound very good whether thereare fifteen players or a band with one hundred players.

Creature began as a joke in high school between a friend of mine and me where we described the radical mood swings of our band directors as a creature coming forth from inside of them. Think about the alien from Alien 3 where it opened its mouth and its tongue was a little alien head with teeth of its own. I thought it would be fun to write a piece of music around this creature, so I wrote a short series of story beats and then some music around it. The full story is, unfortunately, lost to history, but the music survived the twenty-five years since its original composition, and in honor of my young self, I merely edited any typos and left it just as I wrote it when I was a seventeen-year-old high school senior. This was my first, solo-written, full band composition, and one can hear that I was a huge fan of Igor Stravinsky.

This is not an easy piece to play. It has time changes aplenty, fast runs in the upper woodwinds, very exposed parts in nearly every section, large interval leaps, and spares hardly anyone's range. The eighth note remains constant across the 4 and 8 time signatures, and the breakdown of the complex time signatures is apparent in how the eighth notes are barred. As a conductor, it will be challenging as well, but I survived it on two occasions as both a senior in high school and in front of a military band, so it can be done.

So enjoy the musical story of a creature who attacks people in its rage and hunger before it is chased and defeated by an angry mob ... but did it really die?

George Willson has been an performer, composer, and conductor for thirty years in various mediums and ensembles.
