This march is enjoyable, melodic, fun to listen to and to perform making it a great outdoor concert selection with a bit of history to enlighten the audience.  As a young man Alton Adams, a native of the Virgin Islands, established Adam’s Juvenile band which became renowned.  The entire band was inducted into the US Navy in 1917 and he became the first black Navy Bandmaster.  He composed this march for the Governor and it was performed by the likes of the great bands of Sousa and Goldman.  Excellent for outdoors concerts. The Last Emperor is a 1987 epic biographical drama film about the life of Puyi, the final Emperor of China. It is directed by Bernardo Bertolucci and depicts Puyi's life from his ascent to the throne as a small boy to his imprisonment and political rehabilitation by the Chinese Communist Party. It premiered at the 1987 Tokyo International Film Festival, earning widespread positive reviews from critics and was also a commercial success. At the 60th Academy Awards, it won all nine Oscars it was nominated for, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It also won several other accolades, including three BAFTA Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, nine David di Donatello Awards, and a Grammy Award for its musical score, which features nine pieces composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto, five by David Byrne, one from Cong Su, and a few incidental pieces of source music. 'Open The Door' occurs quite early in the film and can be considered to be one of the main themes, often performed instrumentally in concert by Ryuichi Sakamoto - as a song, with lyrics by Leslie Bricusse, it is not often heard, so this piece would work on many levels in a concert of film music.

An optional intro uses body percussion to potentially engage the audience. The first musical section is part A, all parts melody; the second section is part A, all parts harmony. You can mix and match. The third section is the B portion of the song, with mixed melody and harmony. The third section is back to part A, but with parts dropping out, then everybody comes back in to wallop the last note. The piece is designed for easy repetition, so the music can be sustained for as long as you want. Hope you have a lot of fun playing around with this!

A slow march I entitled The Royal Hussar, is an original ceremonial slow march of mine, suitable for indoor or outdoor performance. Slow March: This is a ceremonial pace, used for funeral marches and when a unit’s colours are marched out in front of the troops. The feet are kept parallel to the ground and the arms are never used. In the United States Marine Corps, arms swing as the distance they normally would in quicktime, but at the same pace as marching. U.S. Marine Color Guards do not swing their arms. Slow March is typically used in the Marine Corps for funeral details and ceremonies such as the Marine Corps Ball (when the cake is escorted out). In Spain, Latin America, and the Philippines this is done during religious processions whenever a military band joins it. This march style is the official parade march in the armed forces of Bolivia and Ecuador and the military academies and schools of Venezuela, done with the goose step during parades and ceremonies. The standard pace is 60 paces per minute. Famous slow marches include:Preobrajensky Regimental Slow March Presented to the Royal Marines by Admiral of the Fleet The Earl Mountbatten of Burma on 10th June 1964 and first performed as the Regimental Slow March of the Royal Marines on Horse Guards Parade that night. The march was composed by the Russian composer Donajowsky for the Russian Tzar’s Preobrajensky Guard. The Royal Hussars Slow March ’Coburg’, a tune composed by Haydn and arranged by Grant-James in the late 19th Century, is without doubt one of the most well-known and famous Slow Marches to be written. ’The Eagle’, which itself is a combination of the 14th and 20th Hussars slow marches is also a very strong march, but not widely known outside 14th/20th King’s Hussars’ circles. The Garb of Old Gaul (sometimes given as Auld Gaul) is an 18th-century patriotic Scottish march and song about Highland soldiers during the Seven Years War. The music was written by General John Reid, who was a senior officer of the 42nd Regiment of Foot (The Black Watch) during the Seven Years War. The words have traditionally been attributed to Sir Harry Erskine (1710 -1765). Robert Burns described it as This excellent loyal Scottish song and states that it first appeared in print in Herd’s Collection of 1769. Alternative titles include The Highland Character and The Highland or 42nd Regiment’s March. The tune was originally a quick march but was later rearranged as a slow march. Other famous slow marches of the British Army include Golden Spurs & Scipio. Put away Scipio, Coburg & Garb of Old gaul, time for a newcomer on the block! The 1866 extravaganza was an enormous hit, with multiple Broadway revivals and numerous productions around the United States throughout the 19th century. The only extant music from any version of The Black Crook is sheet music published in 1866: One song and four selections for piano solo by Thomas Baker, the show's musical director. This is a unique concert band arrangement of one of those piano pieces, a lively galop that has musical as well as historical interest. It's particularly appropriate for outdoor summer concerts, or as a curtain-raiser, finale, or encore for concerts at any time of the year. It was originally released as an album track on 1971's Poems, Prayers & Promises and later, as a single in 1973. Denver wrote this song on an early spring day in Minnesota when the rain was gently falling. He found himself looking forward to spending more time outdoors and enjoying the sunshine. He said of the song, On one level it was about the virtues of love. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1429858). Venus is a song by Dutch rock band The Shocking Blue, released as a single in the Netherlands in the summer of 1969. Written by Robbie van Leeuwen, the song topped the charts in nine countries. It has since been covered dozens of times by many artists. In 1986, English girl group Bananarama covered Venus for their third studio album, True Confessions, with the single reaching number one in six countries and has been featured in numerous films, television shows, and commercials. Venus had been a part of Bananarama's repertoire for several years before they actually recorded it. The group's three members, Sara Dallin, Siobhan Fahey and Keren Woodward had the idea of turning the song into a dance tune, but they were met with resistance from their producers at the time, Steven Jolley and Tony Swain. The group brought the idea to the production trio of Stock Aitken Waterman, and it became Bananarama's first collaboration with them. The track was initially produced in an arrangement more faithful to the Shocking Blue original, but was reworked in hi-NRG style after Fahey suggested that their version should sound similar to Dead or Alive's You Spin Me Round (Like a Record). Turn back the clock with this great song, perfect for outdoor performances - there are solo spots for alto sax and trumpet, as desired and the key has been shifted up from the original E minor to make it more band-friendly.

'Bargain Hunt' is a British television programme in which two pairs of contestants are challenged to buy antiques from shops or a fair and then sell them in an auction for a profit. It has aired on BBC One since 13 March 2000. Whilst much of the music used in the show is from library stock, the distinctive theme, which has gone through a few different versions, remains, with a great line for baritone saxophone. It's short, but punchy, so would provide a bit of light relief in an outdoor setting or a concert of film and TV music.

There is a solo oppotunity for your star alto sax player (with a suggested solo line), bass guitar and vibes, but just relax into the groove and everything will be just fine - be careful of the 'one drop' towards the end, though...

For God and Country was written in honor of Lt. Aloysius Schmitt for the Loras College Wind Ensembles, Glenn Pohland, director. The Catholic chaplain and Columbia College (now Loras College) graduate gave his life helping twelve of his shipmates exit a porthole on the side of the U.S.S. Oklahoma as it took enemy torpedo fire, rolled over and finally faltered on the morning of December 7, 1941.Throughout the work, the Navy Hymn Eternal Father, Strong to Save is a reoccurring motive.  Several U.S. Navy bugle calls are also used in the work including portions of Abandon Ship, Man Overboard, Man Torpedo Defense Battery and Watertight Doors.  The work ends with a quiet and solemn rendition of the Navy Hymn in various solo instruments.                                                                                                                      Duration:  9:00
