A prolific composer, instrumentalist, teacher and conductor, Johnson led a varied and successful career in an era in U.S. history that was not inviting to black professionals. His musical interests ranged from the contemporary works of Johann Strauss Jr. to traditional, popular dances.The cotillion is a French country dance that was popular in Europe and America in the 18th century. It was originally danced by four couples in square formation and was an important influence in the development of the square dance in the United States. Francis Johnson composed two sets of six piano accompaniments for this dance. The original 1818 publication even included movement instructions for the eight dancers. The short and charming melodies that he composed are a fitting example of popular dance music of the time.This transcription may be performed as a piano solo, with the piano as a non-solistic instrument within the ensemble or without piano at all. If it is to be a piano solo, the other instruments should not play the passages marked “opt. tacet (optional tacet). If the piano will not be treated soloistically, the conductor can have some or all of the “opt. tacet passages played at their discretion. It contains the parts for Piccolo, Flute, Oboe, B flat Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, B flat Trumpet, Tenor Saxophone, French Horn in F, Bass Clarinet, Baritone Saxophone, Bassoon, Euphonium, Trombone, Bass Drum and Snare Drum. The piece uses the whole ranges of these instruments, from the A1 that can be played by the Bassoon and Trombone, to the C8 that is required from the Piccolo. Many of these instruments need to use techniques to utilise their full range, so make sure your instrumentalists are skilled and knowledgeable.The song has a lot of rhythmic and melodic diversity, and switches tempo and key signature frequently. The keys used are C major, F major, G major and E minor, not too difficult. Some of the rhythms can be quite hard to grasp, and instrumentalists must be able to play quick notes with accuracy. Again, make sure your instrumentalists are well learned for this. The song has a set of melodies, that are divided up by three bar percussion solos. Many of the instruments play solos or solis throughout the song, which it can be good for developing an instrumentalist's ability to stay calm on stage. The song should also improve their ability to play some complex rhythms at quite a fast speed.

Published by John McAllister (A0.778205). Lawson's Fork March is a straight-forward march for young (1st to 2nd year typically) bands. It would be a great first piece to start learning march style. It has simple, accessible melodies, accompanied by the idiomatic low brass (all in unison) and percussion engine. It starts in the key of Eb and modulates to Ab, however it only uses accidentals and doesn't actually change the key signature. I titled the march after Lawson's Fork Creek which I often stroll alongside. This creek and the trails nearby were a tremendous refuge for me during Covid.

The lyrics embrace both a secular and religious message of peace, love, and hope inspired by the beauty of winter snow.  I really wanted to write a more profound Christmas song with an important message embracing a modern view of Christmas since so many songs are commercialized or limited in meaning.Having lived in the Arizona desert since 2007, snow has become a novelty to me, and I was inspired by its beauty and the memories I had of winter growing up in northern Illinois.  The chorus that repeats throughout the song presents an irony of winter warming the soul.  I found this to be both interesting and also meaningful in that I was describing my new viewpoint of winter snow (seeing more beauty in it than before) and presenting a metaphor for life-one that encourages the listener to see the beauty in something that most northerners despise. The first verse begins with sensory perceptions including seeing, hearing, touching, and smelling various natural qualities of winter.  The second verse describes the joy of children playing in the snow and their belief in winter stories.  The third verse is directed at worrying adults with a message of hope for the future.  The bridge encourages the listener to look past the negativity and differences in other people and look towards Christmas and the new year for a hope renewed.  The final verse concludes with the traditional religious view of Christmas tradition.

Gustav Mahler’s “Veni Creator Spiritus� was a new musical setting for the lyrics of a 9th century Latin hymn, originally sung as a Gregorian chant, as an invocation of the Holy Spirit during the celebration of the Christian Feast of Pentecost. This work would comprise the Part I of the symphony with Part II being a setting of the words from the closing scene of “Faust� by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Mahler envisioned the premiere of this new symphony, Number 8, as a massively grand spectacle, with an orchestra not only including strings but a large brass and woodwind section, eight soloists, two full adult choruses, and a children’s choir. The full complement for the premiere was 171 instrumentalists and 858 singers, a total of 1029 musicians, which inspired the promoter to advertise the work as “Symphony of a Thousand.� Part I, “Veni Creator Spiritus,� expresses the whole range of human emotions: grand statements expressing the awe of divine majesty alternate with gentle melodic lines of tender love. It combines moments of awesome dramatic tension with the lightness of a fugue. Robert Anello’s arrangement makes this exceptional music accessible to large concert bands while maintaining the essence and flow of Mahler’s original work.
