Composer's web store: https://www.sounded.us/baseline/product/merry-dont-you-know-by-david-ahrens-wind-band/“God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen†is a traditional English Christmas carol dating to the mid 17th Century. It was referenced by Charles Dickens in his 1843 novella “A Christmas Carol†but with the lyric:“God bless you, Merry Gentleman!May nothing you dismay!â€The phrase “God rest you merry†historically meant “may God grant you peace and happinessâ€. “Rest you merry†was used both in Shakespeare’s “As You Like It†and “Romeo and Julietâ€. Over time, there has been confusion over this title due to changes in common language usage. The word ‘merry’ is an adverb of rest and not an adjective of Gentlemen.“Pat-A-Pan†is a traditional Burgundian French Christmas carol written by Bernard de La Monnoye and published in 1720. The text calls for the bringing of a drum and flute to play for newborn Jesus Christ in worship. The title is onomatopoeic for the sound of a drum, as is the additional lyric “tu-re-lu-re-lu†for the sound of a flute.“Yigdal†is a Jewish hymn and prayer that is a poetic adaptation of Maimonides’ 13 principles of faith. The text is attributed to 14th century poet Daniel ben Judah. The melody dates to the 17th century or earlier. It is traditionally sung for morning prayer and as the conclusion of Shabbat evening services. Upon hearing Yigdal, English Methodist Thomas Olivers adapted this melody for use in his Christian hymn “The God of Abraham Praiseâ€, which is a paraphrase of the ben Judah doxology, and was first published in 1772.“Merry! Don’t You Know?†is a playful melding of these sacred songs, acting as a reminder that Christmas is a time to be merry and joyful as we celebrate the nature, power, and love of God.

Concert Band - Digital Download SKU: A0.732944 Composed by Carl Meinecke. Arranged by Marc Oliver. Contemporary. Score and parts. 152 pages. Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings #2002251. Published by Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings (A0.732944). Amidst the Thunder of Cannons' is 1 of 2 band works written by Carl Meinecke although his focus was mostly on orchestra where he was both violinist and conductor. The music was published first by A.E. Fischer in Germany in 1907 and in 1913 by Carl Fischer in the US. The piece is well crafted in the German march style with skillful melodic and contrapuntal writing. There is a refreshing change of meter from cut time to 6/8 at the Trio. Marc Oliver's brand new edition is crisp and clean and the first new edition in nearly a century. 'Amidst the Thunder of Cannons' is a welcome addition to the band repertoire in the 21st century.

Concert Band - Digital Download SKU: A0.733090 Composed by Charles Edward Duble. Arranged by Marc Oliver. Contemporary. Score and parts. 77 pages. Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings #3115021. Published by Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings (A0.733090). Charles Edward Duble was a tall, lanky trombone player who, as a circus band musician, was always seeking an opportunity to play a practical joke on someone. Duble's more serious side emerged when he composed for the many circus bands of the time time. Battle of the Winds can be a march, or it can be a battle among the wind players in the band. Duble's allegiance to the low brass gives the euphoniums, trombones, and tubas an edge at times, but the contest is fascinating from the introduction to the stinger at the end. Merle Evans and the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey's Circus Band performed it for years during their pre-game show.

Published by Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings (A0.733071). Berlioz's Hungarian March from The Damnation of Faust is based on a song composed in 1809 by János Bihari (1764–1827), written in honor of Ferenc Rákóczi, a Hungarian military leader and politician who was at the heart of Hungary’s quest for independence from Austria. It is not known if the tune by Bihari was based on a Hungarian folk melody of the time or if he composed it himself .

Concert Band - Digital Download SKU: A0.733031 Composed by Henry Fillmore. Arranged by Marc Oliver. 20th Century. Score and parts. 74 pages. Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings #2347385. Published by Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings (A0.733031). The Circus Bee is a circus march written by Henry Fillmore of Cincinnati, Ohio in February 1908. Because of its complexity and advanced writing, it is sometimes used as either an opener or an encore piece in band concerts. The Circus Bee was a celebration of sorts for the fact that Henry Fillmore and his father, who managed their publishing business in Cincinnati, finally agreed that the young composer could publish his music at home, even though it did not meet the elder Fillmore's standard of being religious music. It was during this period of conflict between father and son that Henry, showing defiance to his father for not repenting his desire to write marches, reportedly told him, I will huff and I will puff, and I will continue to write marches. This alleged statement by the younger Fillmore gave birth to one of his many composing pseudonyms, Will Huff. The march is named after an imaginary circus newspaper and reflects Fillmore's lifelong interest in circuses and his varied experiences while touring with five different big top shows where he played the trombone. He was also famous for his many trombone marches, such as Bones Trombone, Teddy Trombone and the famous Lassus Trombone, all showcasing the trombone glissando, or smear, caused by moving the trombone slide in and out while playing the instrument (usually loud).
