Composed by Frederick M. Lehman. Arranged by Leandro Bizama. Christian,Christmas,Easter,Jewish,Sacred. Score and parts. 44 pages. Leandro Bizama Music #2907105. Published by Leandro Bizama Music (A0.933695).

The Love of God, for Concert Band, Grade Level 2.5, dur. 4 mins.

The lyrical nature of the tune combined with the powerful poem about God's love make this one of the greatest hymns ever. This arrangement maintains the power of the tune and represents the beauty of the poetry musically. Each verse has its own special setting corresponding to the words of the hymn. Starting in a mysterious, martial and subdued style, The Love of God develops into a strong but respectful to the hymn type of finale, complete with musical representations of the waves of the sea. It is accessible to High School groups but also appropriate for Community or College ensembles. Because of its history (see below) it can appeal to a wide range of faiths and inspire unity and peace. Audiences and performers alike are sure to find it inspiring and uplifting.
---
A little about the history of the hymn:
Could we with ink the ocean fill, and were the skies of parchment made;
Were every stalk on earth a quill, and every man a scribe by trade;
To write the love of God above would drain the ocean dry;
Nor could the scroll contain the whole, though stretched from sky to sky.
These timeless words inspired Lehman to write The Love of God after they were found edged on the wall of an asylum patient's room. They are an adaptation and translation of a poem originally written in Aramaic by the Jewish Rabbi of Worms, Germany around the year 1050. This poem in turn is similar to a passage in the Qur'an. What an incredible journey for these great words: an ancient poem that has its roots in the Qur'an, later adapted by a Rabbi, written on the wall of an insane asylum by a patient, and finally taken up by a Christian to be the basis of a beautiful song. Surely God's love and music are the only two things powerful enough in our World to bring unity and respect in the face of pride and violence.

The Gallows

..what do I see shifting around these gallows?

Goethe - Faust

Ah! This that I hear, is it the night's north wind yelping or the hanged man who pushes out a sigh on the sinister-looking fork?

Would it be some cricket singing crouched in the moss and barren ivy that the woodland, pitying, uses for shoes?

Would it be some fly on the hunt sounding its horn to ears that cannot hear the fanfare of hallali?

Would it be some beetle in irregular flight picking a bloody hair from his bald skull?

Or would it even be some spider embroidering half a yard of muslin to make a tie for this strangled neck?

It is the bell ringing against the walls of a town, below the horizon, and the carcass of a hanged man reddened by the setting sun.

By Stephen R Dalrymple. By Septimus Winter. Arranged by Stephen R Dalrymple (Dalrymple Designs). Folk. Score and parts. 54 pages. Stephen R Dalrymple #3566019. Published by Stephen R Dalrymple (A0.818257).

Abraham’s Daughter: March from the Civil War ♫ by Septimus Winter (1861) ♫ with When Johnny Comes Marching Home by Patrick Gilmore a.k.a. Louis Lambert (1863). ♫ arranged for concert band by Stephen R Dalrymple ♫ After a family trip to Gettysburg, Antietam, Harper’s Ferry, and Ford Theater, I created a concert band arrangement to solidify the trip in my mind using a popular Civil War song from the North, “Abraham’s Daughter,†and a song used by both North and South, “Johnny Comes Marching Home.†♫ Music was a means for soldiers to release the tensions of war. By December 1861 the Union army had 28,000 musicians in 618 bands, not counting soldiers who travelled with violins and other musical instruments. Soldiers often sang as they marched by day and at night in camp. Musical duels were not uncommon between Union and Confederate bands. This idea inspired the last section of the arranger where the 2 songs are played against each other. ♫ Septimus Winner wrote “Abraham’s Daughter†in 1861 for the Minstrel stage. “Abraham’s Daughter†pictures a fresh recruit that is on his way to Washington DC to be processed and trained for future battles. ♫ Given the unpublished verses we have, Abraham’s Daughter was undoubtedly sung and embellished by Union soldiers as they travelled from battlefield to battlefield. ♫ Winner is also known for writing “Ten Little Injuns†“Listen to the Mockingbird†and “Where, Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone?†♫ Abraham Lincoln had 4 sons, Robert Todd, Edward Baker, William Wallace, and Thomas (Tad); but no daughters. So, who is Abraham’s daughter? ♫ Oh! Should you ask me who she am, Columbia is her name, sir; She is the child of Abraham, Or Uncle Sam, the same, sir. Now if I fight, why ain't I right? And don't you think I oughter. The volunteers are a-pouring in From every loyal quarter, And I'm goin' down to Washington To fight for Abraham's daughter. ♫ At the beginning of the war, the majority of soldiers, North and South, were fighting to uphold their view of government, each side justifying its position by quoting the Constitution. Southern States saw each State as a sovereign, independent nation. Abraham Lincoln insisted that the United States were one nation. For Abraham Lincoln, the purpose of the war was to preserve the Union. The undivided union was Lincoln’s daughter. ♫ arrangement © 2000, 2013 Stephen R Dalrymple ♫ recording ℗ 2021 Stephen R Dalrymple ♫ presentation © 2021 Stephen R Dalrymple ♫ sequenced by the arranger ♫ Purchase price includes permission to make photocopies of parts and additional scores for a medium size school band. ♫ This .pdf file includes 1) Condensed Conductor’s Score 2) Individual parts for: Instrumentation: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet 1, Clarinet 2, Alto Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Baritone Sax, Bassoon, Trumpet 1, Trumpet 2, F Horn, Trombone, Treble Clef Baritone, Tuba, Electric Bass, Snare and Bass Drums, Cymbals, and Bells. 3) Condensed Conductor’s Score in a smaller format for use in a 10 inch tablet 4) The same parts formatted for a 10 inch tablet. ♫ The YouTube video contains a full recording.

Composed by Becca Schack. 20th Century,Contemporary,Jazz. Score and parts. 123 pages. Ingenue Music #3140879. Published by Ingenue Music (A0.1028006).

Commissioned by the International School Of Luxembourg (ISL). Premiered in Luxembourg, in December 2010, conducted by Dimosthenis Dimitrakoulakos.

Program Notes:

This piece is named for Yemanya (pronounced Yeh-MAHN-jah or Yeh-MAHN-jee), the Brazilian/African nurturing mother goddess of the ocean. She's known as a protector, supplier, and one who grants wishes. Every December 31st, Brazilians celebrate Yemanya by casting white flowers and miniature boats into the sea. If Yemanya grants your wish, her waves will swallow the boat and if she denies the wish the boat will wash up on shore. Yemanya teaches us to dive in at the very moment of golden opportunity, to enjoy the rhythms of life, and to allow all doubts to be washed away.

The fluid, oceanic themes of the instruments represent the flow of the water and magic of Yemanya. The piece starts off with a soft wind chime accompanied by gong/tam-tam. Then the vibraphone enters mysteriously as the main theme that drives the whole piece as it subtly changes. The double bass creates a rhythmic pulse beneath the other sections. The gentle melodies in the flute dance around jazzy articulations in the trumpets and saxophones. There's an interplay of Afro-Cuban beats in the marimba and a bossa nova rhythm between the temple blocks and xylophone.

Throughout the piece I have tried to capture the water's motion and the ever-changing face of the sea. As the vibraphone returns to the original melody, we are reminded of Yemanya's eternal beauty and peaceful nature.

Composed by Jack Wall and Sam Hulick. Arranged by David Boyd. 21st Century,Instructional,Video Game. 207 pages. David Boyd #1065985. Published by David Boyd (A0.1489135).

General Overview

Suicide Mission is a pivotal piece in the soundtrack of the Mass Effect 2, capturing the high-stakes and intense emotions of the video game's climax. The original composition by Jack Wall and Sam Hulick is characterised by its unique driving rhythms, dramatic melodies, orchestral grandeur and bombastic tension. This arrangement for concert band and wind ensemble aims to retain the epic and cinematic quality of the original, while adapting the instrumentation and dynamics to suit a modern wind band setting.

This piece is crafted to subtly unsettle the listener, mixing heroism with barely under control anxiety. The irregular time signature and rhythms, combined with counter melodies and eerie open fifths and octaves, all contribute to this effect. The alterations to the familiar Commander Shepard Theme, first introduced here in bar 17 by the horns and alto clarinet, add to the tension, keeping your audience on the edge of their seats until the final note!

This arrangement is scored for a wind ensemble or concert band with some extended percussion, including:
