Symphony No. 25 in G minor - transposed parts for Horn in F (Hn. 1, 2, 3, 4)

Sinfonie in g K. 183 (K.6: 173 dB)

Works with
Barenreiter and other editions.

These transposed parts have prevalent measure numbers, but the rehearsal letters (taken from the Barenreiter Urtext) might be in different locations in other editions. These are not edited parts, but are simply transposed into F from the publisher's original printing.

Recently performed in concert, the parts have been highly proofed and edited for clarity and accuracy.

Comment: Having both paired parts on a single staff (1st/2nd Horn; 3rd/4th Horn) can help with balance issues by allowing certain notes to be played by only one player; this is especially true for certain high notes in the 1st/2nd parts..

Original keys:

Mov. 1 - Horn 1 & 2 in B (B-flat); Horn 3 & 4 in G

Mov. 2 - Horn 1 & 2 in Es (E-flat); Horn 3 & 4 - tacet

Mov. 3 - Horn 1 & 2 in B (B-flat); Horn 3 & 4 in G

Mov. 4 - Horn 1 & 2 in B (B-flat); Horn 3 & 4 in G

Music by Mark O’Connor

34 pages - 45:00 minutes in length

The FIDDLE CONCERTO for violin and orchestra is Mark O’Connor’s first orchestral score, composed when he was 31 years old in 1992-93. A few years later it was recorded for Warner Bros. The recording featured the Concordia Orchestra with Marin Alsop conducting and the composer as violin soloist. The recording was named by the BMG Classical Catalog as one of the top ten classical recordings of 1995. The composition was reviewed by a distinguished panel of composers and was awarded a Meet The Composer grant for another original concerto by O’Connor. Beginning with the premiers in 1993, and including the subsequent performances into 1999, the year of this publication, The FIDDLE CONCERTO has received more performances with orchestra than any other violin concerto composed in the last 50 years. The music is suited for advanced levels and the slow second movement can be appropriate for intermediate.

What is American Classical music? This CD contains Mark O'Connor's latest orchestral works: Americana Symphony Variations on Appalachia Waltz(2006) and Concerto No. 6 Old Brass (2003). Sony Classical//BMG label director Gilbert Hetherwick explains; Dvorak and Copland painted symphonic landscapes using melodies inspired by the Americana tradition, and Mark O'Connor actually comes from that tradition itself. He's lived it every day of his life. And you hear it in every note of his Americana Symphony. For the majority of his solo career, O'Connor has dedicated himself to composing for orchestra: he has written six full-length concertos, several orchestral suites and string orchestra compositions, and most recently his first Symphony.

David Wallace, Juilliard School faculty member and Senior Teaching Artist with the New York Philharmonic, comments on the overall characteristics of O'Connor's music: The Americana Symphony combines historical narrative with classical and folk variation principles. The Symphony contains instrumental virtuosity, rhythmic drive, poignant lyricism, and probing counterpoint. With the Americana Symphony, Mark O'Connor provides his answer to a question that has intrigued U. S. composers since the debut of Dvorak's New World Symphony in 1892: How do you write the great American Symphony?

William Intrilligator, artistic director of the Dubuque Symphony, conducted one of the first performances of the Americana Symphony: Very few pieces of new music have the same emotional and visceral effect as this Symphony, he writes. It has such power and beauty, and these traits are expressed in original ways that are pure O'Connor and truly American.

Marin Alsop, artistic director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and this recording's conductor of the Americana Symphony, calls the Symphony simply A hit!

Three Pieces For Violin and Orchestra Violin Concerto No. 2

Originally composed to mark the bicentennial of the state of Tennessee, O’Connor’s 2nd Violin Concerto was premiered with the Nashville Symphony during the 1996 celebration. The movements, Call of the Mockingbird, Trail of Tears, and Fanfare for the Volunteer reflect on broad themes relating to the history and culture of the state. The work was released in 1999 on a cd for Sony Classical performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra titled by its final movement Fanfare for the Volunteer.

Call of the Mockingbird;  The evocations of nature and landscape. In the course of its many voicings (both literal and figurative), the theme evokes a broad range of images, from the bird of the title to the ruggedness of the Appalachian terrain.

Trail of Tears;  The tragedy of the forced migration of the Cherokee Indians in 1838-39. An episode in American history, the work incorporates aspects of Native American, Celtic and Central European traditions within the broader context of a symphonic composition.

Fanfare for the Volunteer;  The fierce and bittersweet pride of the southeastern United States. Perhaps, the clearest blending of O’Connor’s background as a traditional fiddler with his more recent work as a symphonic composer. The occasional hints of Irish balladry evoke nothing so much as the keenest sense of longing.
