TAPS  A Remembrance
Bb Solo Trumpet, Narrator, Piano/Organ/Orchestra, optional SATB Choir  > 2:00
TAPS - A Remembrance is ideal for the kinds of brief but important Memorial Day and/or Independence Day observances so often called for in our time.
The poignant narration recalls the story of United States Army Sergeant Keith Clark playing the bugle call know today as Taps for the interment of President John F. Kennedy (November of 1963). As author William Manchester later wrote, “The 6th note of the 24 he played seemed like “a catch in your voice or a swiftly stifled sob†that the whole world heard, and that remains part of our national heritage.
The background arrangement (optionally with chorus) heightens the emotion of the story until both give way to a regulation trumpet solo version that includes the grace note error and fades at the end. The orchestration is done in a 4 Part + format that lends itself to optional performance by any section of the orchestra (originally for brass alone).
The choral octavo carries the complete narration (also see below) with accompaniment (playable by/adaptable to organ) and the solo trumpet part (all that’s really needed to perform the piece) along with permission to reproduce the octavo for optional choir/ensemble.
The choral writing involves divisi only at two easily sung cadence points.
And, it can be performed by just the brass and the narrator.
For those who may not know the story:

NARRATOR:  Since the mid 1800s the bugle call known today as Taps has heralded rest for the weary, as well as comfort and encouragement in times of deep personal and collective grief.*
* music begins
At about 3:00 p.m. on November 24th 1963, as the nation mourned the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, United States Army Sergeant Keith Clark raised his bugle at Arlington National Cemetery [† with thoughts of I Corinthians 15:51 in mind, “The trumpet shall soundâ€].
Clearly broadcast throughout the country and around the world, the 6th note of the 24 he played seemed like “a catch in your voice or a swiftly stifled sob†as author William Manchester put it. But, as another observer** noted: “Like the crack in the Liberty Bell, it remains part of our
national heritage.â€

Composed by Nathan Grocholski. Classical,Contemporary. Score and parts. 115 pages. Nathan Grocholski #679248. Published by Nathan Grocholski (A0.1074986).

The past year has been filled with collective grief throughout the entire world. In some way or another, the global pandemic of 2020-21 has affected each one of us in our own way. In this piece, I illustrate the five stages of grief; denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. The entire piece is harmonically based on two pitches, E and G-sharp. In the denial and anger stage of this work, this is characterized by a C augmented chord. Once the music finally makes sense of this loss, each of the instruments begin to play off each other; as part of the bargaining. About two-thirds of the way into the entire composition, the piece dramatically slows down and the E and G-sharp chord returns, only this time with C-sharp to represent a minor chord. The texture is heavy to represent depression. At measure 201, the flute enters with a melody that gradually grows, symbolic of accepting the loss as the texture increases. The final phrase of this piece ends with the true acceptance of this loss, but the grief has not completely dissipated. It shrinks, but still remains. The opening section’s E and G# are retained in the final chord of the composition to show that grief remains. But they are now part of an E major triad, suggesting acceptance and moving forward.

Composed by Cliff Eidelman. Arranged by Chris Siddall. Film/TV. 24 pages. Chris Siddall Music Publishing #1016115. Published by Chris Siddall Music Publishing (A0.1435948).

1991 saw the final big screen outing of the original Star Trek crew. Following the critical and commercial disappointment of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, director Nicholas Meyer, who also directed Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, returned to the franchise and set out to tell a more complex and tonally dark story than any previous installment.

Thanks in part to the previous movie’s box office performance, the limited budget available for music led Meyer to consider using Gustav Holst’s The Planets suite to score the movie, but the extraordinary cost of licensing that work and adapting it to fit the picture ruled it out as a viable option. After listening to several demo tapes, young and upcoming composer Cliff Eidelman was selected to write the new score, and the resulting soundtrack remains a uniquely dark and melodramatic powehouse.

Created from the original manuscript, this release offers a rare opportunity to study film music in its authentic, original orchestration and arrangement. An opportunity not to be missed!

By En Vogue. By Caroline Riddick, Issac Phillips, John Lennon, and Paul McCartney. Arranged by Javier Martínez Maya. Contemporary. Score and parts. 36 pages. Arte Nova Music Lab #6431889. Published by Arte Nova Music Lab (A0.742588).

Yesterday is a song by the English rock band the Beatles, written by Paul McCartney and credited to Lennon–McCartney. It was first released on the album Help! in August 1965, except in the United States, where it was issued as a single in September. The song reached number one on the US charts. It subsequently appeared on the UK EP Yesterday in March 1966 and made its US album debut on Yesterday and Today, in June 1966.

McCartney's vocal and acoustic guitar, together with a string quartet, essentially made for the first solo performance of the band. It remains popular today and, with more than 2,200 cover versions, is one of the most covered songs in the history of recorded music. Yesterday was voted the best song of the 20th century in a 1999 BBC Radio 2 poll of music experts and listeners and was also voted the No. 1 pop song of all time by MTV and Rolling Stone magazine the following year. In 1997, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI) asserts that it was performed over seven million times in the 20th century.

By Murray Gold. By Murray Gold. Arranged by Kevin Riley. 20th Century,Film/TV,Thriller. 54 pages. Kevin Riley #941199. Published by Kevin Riley (A0.1356528).

Doctor Who follows the adventures of the title character, a rogue Time Lord with somewhat unknown origins who goes by the name the Doctor. The Doctor fled Gallifrey, the planet of the Time Lords, in a stolen TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension(s) in Space), a time machine that travels by materialising into, and dematerialising out of, the time vortex. The TARDIS has a vast interior but appears smaller on the outside, and is equipped with a chameleon circuit intended to make the machine take on the appearance of local objects as a disguise. Due to a malfunction, the Doctor's TARDIS remains fixed as a blue British police box.

 The main theme was originally composed by Ron Grainer but this version is based on what Murray Gold wrote.

Symphony No 22 Galaxymbion is a 7-movement symphonic setting of scenes from my novel The Galaxymbion Odyssey

MOVEMENTS 4 – The Sirantiga Disaster

TOTAL NUMBER OF BARS = 2670

TOTAL DURATION = 125 minutes

General methodology of composition;

1.       No fixed tonal centre

2.       Each movement inherits material from its predecessor

3.       The work is modular. This means that the 1st, 4th and 7th movements can be presented together as the symphony proper if full staging is not possible. The movements that double as concertos can be presented separately in their own right, hence their individual opus numbers.

4.       The work has developed from a highly individualized harmonic language that establishes its own laws independent from and additional to conventional harmonic practice. The same is true of the work’s unusual tonality. Central to this approach is the use of dodecaphonic principles in both the melodic and harmonic content. The intent here is to incorporate Schoenberg’s theoretical model of tone rows in an inclusive way, so that it is part of the work’s musical language and an additional tool in structuring and developing ideas. As a result the work remains tonal, albeit inhabiting a distinct and exotic aural landscape.

There is no rigid adherence to conventional forms or methods of symphonic development, rather the work takes an entirely eccentric and highly individual approach. Whilst this is the ‘spark’ or heart of the work there is still an intention to create music instead of noise. Discords are therefore used as elsewhere in my more conventionally tonal works; as a natural consequence of the work itself instead of a forced snub at tonal music.
