Despite the many challenges faced by a female composer in Victorian era Great Britain, Smith’s compositions during this period of her life received a high level of praise from the British press. Despite this early praise, Smith never received the long-term recognization her talents deserved. Due to a number of factors, her orchestral compositions were not even published until the early 2000s. This edition is based entirely on Smith’s original manuscript. It is highly edited including an update to modern instrumentation and the addition of missing/ inconsistent dynamics and articulations. Concerto for Soprano Saxophone was commissioned and premiered by Swedish saxophonist Anders Paulsson in 1998 with the Northern Arizona University Orchestra, Robert Baldwin conducting. I knew of Paulsson’s expertise and artistry as I had composed my cantata Feet of Jesus with his playing in mind. The first movement contains thematic material that is repeated and developed in the second and third movements. I wanted to take advantage of the melodic potential of the soprano sax, exploring nuances of color throughout the range. There are slight suggestions of jazz elements. This first movement introduces the sound of the soprano saxophone and suggests what is to come later on with more challenging technical passages.

Doing so under the long shadows of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven complicated the situation, yet Mayer prospered and was quite successful during her lifetime. Sadly, despite this early success, her works have not received the number of performances they deserve. Faust Overture, premiered shortly before Mayer’s death, is by far her most successful orchestral work. In it, one can clearly hear the in?uence of Beethoven. This edition is based entirely on Mayer’s 1880 publication. It is highly edited including an update to modern instrumentation and the addition of missing/ inconsistent dynamics and articulations.
