Published by Kevin Riley (A0.502630). Early Autumn (1949) is a song composed by Ralph Burns and Woody Herman with lyrics by Johnny Mercer. The song grew out of the fourth segment of Burns' “Summer Sequence� concert piece and was originally recorded by the Herman band on December 27, 1947 with an outstanding eight-bar solo by saxophonist Stan Getz. Herman asked Johnny Mercer to write lyrics in 1952 and he re-recorded the song taking the vocal duties himself. Charted versions were by Woody Herman and by Jo Stafford, both in 1952. This arrangement is for Flute Quartet and full orchestra.

Over the years I have written at least ten orchestral works for Max Hobart including three symphonies and four concertos for saxophone, violin, oboe and cello, respectively. So I was thrilled when Max asked me to write a concerto for trumpet virtuoso Stephen Burns and the Boston Civic Symphony Orchestra. I am familiar with Stephen Burns’ work as a piccolo trumpet player doing concertos from the baroque period. The color of his sound was already in my head. Stephen and I got together in the spring of 2104 and we discussed the project in some detail. We immediately agreed that the work would be in three movements. Each movement would feature a different trumpet: the trumpet in C for the first, the flugelhorn for the second and the piccolo for the last. I began work on the concerto at the end of August and finished it three months later. The work as mentioned earlier is in three movements: 1. Heraldic Beast … Allegro. 2. Bossa Nova in 7/4 … Adagio. 3. Perpetuo Moto … Presto! Enjoy!!!

During this time, the health crisis had shown a spotlight on many of the very serious problems in America that need to be resolved going forward. The country is going to have to go through a long reclamation period to restore what has severely eroded over many decades. As a result, this music reflects a somber tone, but also of determination.

A finalist in the Salford University International Composers' Competition 2014, 'The Smoke that Thunders' tells the story of David Livingstone's journey to discover Victoria Falls. The piece starts out in optimistic fashion, with a Scottish folk song by Rabbie Burns, which Livingstone reportedly used to hum on his travels. The next section describes his battles with local African tribes, who were suspicious of his motives. After surviving these assaults, a more reflective section ensues, which describes the doubts Livingstone had about continuing his mission. This is epitomized by the hymn 'Lord, Send Me Anywhere', which Livingstone himself wrote. The final section describes his journey along the Zambezi River, the triumphant sounds eliciting his elation at discovering the magnificent Victoria Falls, or as it is known by locals, 'Mosi-oa-Tunya' (The smoke that thunders). *Please note audio file is of the brass band version.

Published by Indie Classical Publications (A0.971821). A TRAIN THROUGH YORKSHIRE was one of my earliest works for band. Composed in 2007, it was inspired by the train rides I took while studying abroad in Great Britain. The Yorkshire area is especially beautiful, and the music was inspired by my memory of sitting on a train with a tea in hand on a drizzly day.  However, I was never fully satisfied with the work, as it felt incomplete. One reason was that I was rushed to meet a short deadline when composing this piece. It wasn't until the summer of 2018 that I decided to do it justice and revise it. I also felt like it deserved an orchestral version. This new and final version is a little shorter than the original and offers a better balanced orchestration.  Level: grade 3+ (intermediate) ; Duration: About 5 minutes, 15 seconds
