The song grew out of the fourth segment of Burns' “Summer Sequence� concert piece and was originally recorded by the Herman band on December 27, 1947 with an outstanding eight-bar solo by saxophonist Stan Getz. Herman asked Johnny Mercer to write lyrics in 1952 and he re-recorded the song taking the vocal duties himself. Charted versions were by Woody Herman and by Jo Stafford, both in 1952. This arrangement is for Flute Quartet and full orchestra.

Over the years I have written at least ten orchestral works for Max Hobart including three symphonies and four concertos for saxophone, violin, oboe and cello, respectively. So I was thrilled when Max asked me to write a concerto for trumpet virtuoso Stephen Burns and the Boston Civic Symphony Orchestra. I am familiar with Stephen Burns’ work as a piccolo trumpet player doing concertos from the baroque period. The color of his sound was already in my head. Stephen and I got together in the spring of 2104 and we discussed the project in some detail. We immediately agreed that the work would be in three movements. Each movement would feature a different trumpet: the trumpet in C for the first, the flugelhorn for the second and the piccolo for the last. I began work on the concerto at the end of August and finished it three months later. The work as mentioned earlier is in three movements: 1. Heraldic Beast … Allegro. 2. Bossa Nova in 7/4 … Adagio. 3. Perpetuo Moto … Presto! Enjoy!!!

This short piece for symphony orchestra features two of the same themes previously used in the brass trio, but here they are developed in original ways. Once again, the inspiration comes from the desolate, snow-covered land of Norway. I felt the original trio material deserved to be arranged for a larger ensemble, and using strings as the main emphasis seemed most ideal. In the end, a stripped-down orchestra instrumentation was how I felt the music wanted to be heard. However, there are optional brass parts included.

I decided to write about one of my own fears of growing up in the Midwest. Completed in the the Summer of 2018, this unique work for orchestra is about the terrifying F5 tornadoes that occasionally become a reality. Based on a repeated motive rather than a theme, the work transitions through the life cycle of the wind disaster. A longer contrasting theme, based on the feeling of desperation, is heard between the motive sections. Duration: About 2 minutes, 40 seconds. Performance Note:The 3rd Flute, 3rd Clarinet and 2nd Oboe are optional. The Percussion part may be performed by two players.
