Ithaka was inspired by the poem of the same name by Constantin Cavafy written in 1911. The work, for a classical period size orchestra, is in one movement consisting of 6 sections. Five Pieces for orchestra was commissioned by the Ministry of Culture, Paris, France, in 1992 and Premiered by the Orchestre Symphonique du Conservatoire de Nantes, Christophe Duchêne, conductor in Nantes, France on November 8, 1996.

Peripeteia means an unexpected change of fortune. I wrote this in Aspen, Colorado during the summer of 1977 when Krysztof Penderecki accepted me as a student during the music festival. In a way, this is a tribute to Penderecki and uses some of his landmark techniques as well many of my own. The duration is 10 minutes. This is a manuscript score and sometimes not easy to read, thus the reduced price.

The work, written in 1983 is in 5 movements with a prelude and postlude framing the work, a central slow movement featuring the soprano saxophone and percussion and then 2 scherzos, one on each side of the central, 3rd movement. Thus an arch form of ABCBA. The 2 scherzos share the same material but in the 1st scherzo, this is done in a horizontal manner and in the 2nd scherzo the material is treated vertically. The 3rd and central movement is a Lament featuring a solo soprano saxophone and solo percussionist who dialogue between themselves and with the orchestra. The duration is 24 minutes.
