Third of a set of musical tellings of sayings and proverbs from around the world.  Good for a children's concert. This very short piece opens by depicting the open savanna and the roar of Lion.  A fanfare welcomes him, then we hear his confident march and another roar.  However, he is plagued by many fleas, who perform a jazz waltz between bites and jumps. At the end, helpless Lion staggers away, cheeky fleas still biting. First performance was by York Guildhall Orchestra under Simon Wright. The children in the audience could be invited to state the moral of this Kenyan saying:   A flea can trouble a lion more than the lion can harm a flea. The movement uses flute doubling on referee's whistle,  piccolo, 2 oboes (one doubling on swanee whistle), 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, timpani, untuned percussion, harp and strings.  Duration:  2minutes.

Since relocating to Southern Chile in 2016, composer Edgar Girtain has been immersed in the music of hisadopted home, frequently performing with folk musicians in rural areas through the Los Lagos region. Two Andean Airs draws on a folkmusic style native to northern Chile (cultures of the Andean Plateau). The first piece was drawn from the third of composer's well-known Trios for Flute, Violin and Cello, while the second comes from a suite of Huaynos composed and arranged for a latin-american orchestra of students that the composer co-directs in Puerto Montt. Both are outdoor style pieces, typical of what might be heard performed by brass or pan-flute bands at religious festivals in the deserts of northern Chile.

INSTRUMENTATION: FLEXIBLE ORCHESTRA This will work as long as Parts A, B and C are covered. I have supplied Parts A, B and C for treble clef instruments in C, Bb and Eb; instruments in F; Viola; and for bass clef instruments. Timps, Snare Drum and Other Percussion. Keyboard or Harp part is harder, but covers all three lines. The Eb parts A and B are rather high for beginner brass. The Director can conduct from the score or lead from the keyboard part.

A story for children of all ages.  In 2001 flute magazine Pan had an appeal from Richard Stagg for more octotonic music, and at the same time I felt there was a dearth of good story-telling music for children. Pied Piper of Hamelin was composed for Hessle Sinfonia, who performed it twice with their principal flute, Michael Taylor as soloist and the lyricist Ann Liles narrating, under my baton. Richard Sleight was soloist in the Isle of Axholme Symphony Orchestra's later performance. Show off the versatility and beauty of the flute and entrance the audience (!).There are characteristic themes for the children, the river, the mountain, the pied piper and the rats, variously combined.

The life, trial, death and after-life of Joan are depicted.  The euphonium is the musical representation of Joan and the Speaker speaks her actual words (in English).  History, war, religion, drama.  About 22 minutes.

The first section depicts Cat, slinking along, mieowing and purring  A few mice appear so Cat  flips her tail,   crouches and charges,  whereupon the mice disappear.  Cat nonchalantly licks herself (viola solo)and then walks away, diminuendo.  In the second section, now that Cat is away, the mice come out to play…
