Johann Strauss I (German: Johann Baptist Strauß, Johann Strauss (Vater); also Johann Baptist Strauss, Johann Strauss Sr., the Elder, the Father; 14 March 1804 – 25 September 1849) was an Austrian Romantic composer. He was famous for his waltzes, and he popularized them alongside Joseph Lanner, thereby setting the foundations for his sons to carry on his musical dynasty. He is best known for his composition of the Radetzky March (named after Joseph Radetzky von Radetz).In 1835 he composed one of his most beautiful waltzes – Elisabethen Walzer.Strauss died in Vienna on 25 September 1849 at the age of 45 from scarlet fever contracted from one of his illegitimate children. He was buried at the Döblinger cemetery beside his friend Joseph Lanner. In 1904, both of their remains were transferred to the graves of honour at the Zentralfriedhof. The former Döbling Cemetery is now a Strauss-Lanner Park. Hector Berlioz himself paid tribute to the 'Father of the Viennese Waltz' by commenting that Vienna without Strauss is like Austria without the Danube.

The march is dedicated to the musicians of the Londontowne Symphony (an amateur community ensemble in Edgewater, Maryland) and was written for their Season 10 opening concert. Beginning with a lone snare drum setting a simple cadence, the march quickly builds in volume and intensity as different instruments and groups enter and play with the themes. Lesser known American bugle calls such as Church Call and To the Color vie with snippets of a frolic borrowed from a Max Reger piano piece as every player gets a moment in the spotlight, leading to a rousing finale.

It was usually performed by four pairs of dancers in a rectangular formation, and frequently danced to a medley of opera melodies. So, it turns out that a quadrille is just the 19th-century version of a mash-up! This Quadrille features excerpts from: Symphony #38 (Prague), the Impressario overture, Viennese Sonatina No. 1, Symphony #41 (Jupiter), Don Giovanni, Marriage of Figaro, March for Orchestra, KV 189, Queen of the Night aria from Magic Flute, Abduction from the Seraglio, Turkish March, and the finale from Symphony #29. I'd long wanted to compose an opera based on Arthur Miller's masterpiece based around the Salem witchcraft trials in the American colonies in 1692. Knowing that this was unlikely to come to fruition, nevertheless I sketched out some ideas just in case, which I turned into a 3 movement work for a local orchestra in 1999 for performance at their concert in September 2000. During January - March 2020 I revised the work for a larger orchestra adding 2 more movements (nos 3 & 4) and revising the existing movements. The opening movement is intended to be the Prelude to the opera. The 2nd movement the Prelude to the tense 3rd Act. The 3rd movement takes place at the climactic moment of Act 3, when John Proctor's valiant and desperate attempt to expose Abigail Williams' for what she is backfires, leading to his arrest. The 4th movement opens with the Hymn/Psalm associated with the people of Salem and continues with the reconciliation in prison between John Proctor and his wife Elizabeth.The 5th and final movement accompanies John Proctor's march to execution having nobly torn up his confession of witchcraft. The Hymn/Psalm returns before reminiscences of the opening Prelude return ending the work in a sense of uneasy peace.  Parts can be made available upon request.

It is all about faith and redemption. Elizabeth Kirschner (b. 1955) is a poet who lives in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. Her poem is about the search for God. Claude McKay (1890-1948), a member of the Harlem Renaissance Poets, was originally from Jamaica. His poem asks for God's presence. Edith Stein (1891-1942) was a Carmelite nun who was killed by the Nazis during World War II because she was a Jew. Her poem celebrates God's presence. The final poem is by the Trappist monk, Thomas Merton (1915-1968). His poem, which was published posthumously, is about the assassination of the civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King.
