Composed by Jerry Goldsmith. Arranged by Chris Siddall. Film/TV. Score and parts. 8 pages. Chris Siddall Music Publishing #681583. Published by Chris Siddall Music Publishing (A0.1077397).

After Phillip Lambro’s original score for Chinatown was rejected at the last minute, composer Jerry Goldsmith was brought in to “save the dayâ€. It’s amazing to think that what is now considered a classic score, and a template for the film noir sound, was written in only ten days. In a meeting with producer Robert Evans, it was suggested that they wanted a contemporary 1930s feel to the music, but Jerry pushed back on this idea saying that this was already displayed on the screen, and that the underscore should enhance the emotion, and emotions are timeless. Jerry hadn’t yet considered what he was going to write, when asked what he envisiged in terms of orchestration, so he quickly replied “four pianos, four harps, strings, solo trumpet and two percussion†which Evans liked the idea of. Having spoken himself into this “trapâ€, Jerry then had to go home and write it, and it turned out to be an interesting combination of instruments to write for Created from the original manuscript, this release offers a rare opportunity to study film music in its authentic, original orchestration and arrangement. An opportunity not to be missed!

By Queen. By Brian May. Arranged by John Langley / Studio Orchestrations. Broadway,Film/TV,Musical/Show,Opera,Pop,Rock. 114 pages. Www.studio-orchestrations.com #1008972. Published by www.studio-orchestrations.com (A0.1428144).

This arrangement / score is set in E Minor, the original key of the recorded song.  Versions of this same score will be available on this website in both D Minor [Down a Tone / 2 Steps] and also C sharp Minor [Down a minor 3rd / 3 steps] to give your vocal soloist and choir key options.

Amid a truly extraordinary and long back catalogue of amazing songs written and performed by QUEEN, Who wants to live forever stands out as one of their greatest and most popular musical achievements.  Written originally for the 1986 Sean Connery/Christopher Lambert film HIGHLANDER it highlighted the incredible range of musical output the band were capable of, being best known for their rock music output.  It became a poignant and wistful anthem for the great Freddie Mercury who died only a matter of 5 years later.

It is the most incredible song and in this arrangement combines symphony orchestra, with rock singer, rhythm section and for added value optional SATB chorus, bringing an additional  texture to what is already an epic piece.

The Youtube link below (in the lower key of C# Minor) illustrates the power of this version in an incarnation recorded during lockdown in 2020 with the combined forces of the Welsh National Opera orchestra and chorus and Welsh, TV stage and Hollywood actor star Luke Evans.  All individual tracks and performances were recorded in their singers and musicians own homes, then mixed, spliced and compiled into what many have now come to regard as a classic.

Both this and the WNO version were arranged by John Langley and pay a respectful tribute to the original version and its composer Brian May. We commend this for any concert of film or popular music with your professional, semi-professional or intermediate orchestra, choir and soloist.  [The choir is optional but the piece is much more epic with one!]

By Bud Powell. By Vernon Duke. Arranged by Kevin Riley. 20th Century,Film/TV,Jazz,Standards. Score and parts. 31 pages. Kevin Riley #457309. Published by Kevin Riley (A0.850639).

Autumn in New York is a jazz standard and popular song composed by Vernon Duke in Westport, Connecticut in the summer of 1934. It was written without a commission or for a specific show, but Duke offered it to producer Murray Anderson for his Broadway musical Thumbs Up!. The play opened on December 27, 1934 where the song was performed by singer J. Harold Murray. Many versions of the song have been recorded over the years by numerous musicians and singers. The only version to achieve chart success as a single in the USA was that by Frank Sinatra which reached No. 27 in 1949. Jazz versions have been performed by The Hi Lo's, Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, Bing Crosby, Stan Kenton, Sarah Vaughan, Sheila Jordan, Bill Evans, Tal Farlow, Ahmad Jamal, Buddy De Franco, Salvador Sobral, Al Haig, Diana Krall, and a duet version by Scottish singers Todd Gordon and Carol Kidd. The song was also recorded by Jo Stafford, and by Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald as a duet. This version for Solo Alto Saxophone and Orchestra requires your soloist to be able to improvise.
