When composer Jerry Goldsmith was asked to write the score for MacArthur, people were surprised that he accepted the project because they wondered what he would have left to say, musically, after Patton. Jerry‘s feeling was that MacArthur was a totally different person, and it would be a real challenge to write about another military figure but do it in a different manner. He said “it‘s much more flamboyant in a different sort of way, and it was an interesting task“.

Patton enjoyed resounding critical praise and has since been elevated to the designation of a classic. The film won Academy Awards for nearly all of its major players, with composer Jerry Goldsmith being an unfortunate exception. Goldsmith had already written many scores for World War II topics in his short mainstream career, but none would prove as memorable in any part as the march from Patton, a concert hall staple for the composer throughout his career. Despite the dominance of this theme and the fact that only roughly thirty minutes of music was employed in such a long picture, the effect of his score on the film is far more complicated than many people may realize. While the famous march, with all its bravado from brass, flutes, and snare, easily represents the identity of the character and war, Goldsmith’s work for the film actually spends more time dwelling on the deeper meanings of life that the general himself explored.

Director Phillip Noyce, who had helmed the previous two entries in the Jack Ryan franchise (with scores by James Horner), was replaced at the last minute on 2002’s The Sum of All Fears by Phil Alden Robinson. Despite his prior collaborations with Robinson, Horner stepped aside and thus the scoring assignment went to Jerry Goldsmith.  In the years following his magnificent stretch of production in 1998 and 1999,  Goldsmith’s output had slowed to a crawl and The Sum of All Fears proved to be a welcome return to form. Featuring a song which was later revealed to be an extension of his tribute to the victims of the 9/11 attacks, Goldsmith created an outstanding score with moments of solemn beauty contrasted with robust action music.

After Phillip Lambro’s original score for Chinatown was rejected at the last minute, composer Jerry Goldsmith was brought in to “save the dayâ€. It’s amazing to think that what is now considered a classic score, and a template for the film noir sound, was written in only ten days. In a meeting with producer Robert Evans, it was suggested that they wanted a contemporary 1930s feel to the music, but Jerry pushed back on this idea saying that this was already displayed on the screen, and that the underscore should enhance the emotion, and emotions are timeless. Jerry hadn’t yet considered what he was going to write, when asked what he envisiged in terms of orchestration, so he quickly replied “four pianos, four harps, strings, solo trumpet and two percussion†which Evans liked the idea of. Having spoken himself into this “trapâ€, Jerry then had to go home and write it, and it turned out to be an interesting combination of instruments to write for Created from the original manuscript, this release offers a rare opportunity to study film music in its authentic, original orchestration and arrangement. 1997’s Air Force One saw Harrison Ford’s president of the United States face off against Gary Oldman’s sinister Russian-rebel hijacker. With a plot that required a liberal suspension of disbelief, a serious action score was required. Composer Randy Newman was employed to provide his trademark essence of Americana, however after recording an hour of material for the movie, director Wolfgang Peterson felt Newman’s score carried the wrong tone for the picture and dropped him from the project. The release date was fast approaching, but veteran composer Jerry Goldsmith pledged to make an attempt to save the movie. With only twelve days in which to record a replacement score, he knew he couldn’t accomplish the task alone, and initially asked his son Joel to assist him.  Being unavailable, Jerry turned to rising composer Joel McNeely and the resulting score was exactly what Peterson was looking for.

Writer-producer George Miller, the director behind the Mad Max movies, had heard about Dick King-Smith’s children’s book The Sheep-Pig and dreamed about turning it into a movie. When it came to writing the score he turned to Jerry Goldsmith, with whom he had previously collaborated on his segment of Twilight Zone: The Movie (Nightmare at 20,000 Feet). Fate however, stepped in when Jerry sent his work in progress. Miller felt that the music was too beautiful and lyrical, that it should play up the darker moments in the story. With a typically busy schedule, Goldsmith had no time available to rewrite the score, so the process of selecting a replacement began. Babe was being produced in Australia, which made communicating with LA-based composers a challenge, so six local composers were invited to audition, and Nigel Westlake was selected for the role. Westlake deftly weaves well-known classical themes such as Saint-Saens’ Organ Symphony and Delibes’ Pizzicati from the ballet Sylvia into his score, which sparkles and shines like the unprejudiced heart of the titular pig.

This is an orchestral arrangement of the famous Universal Pictures Logo music, written by Jerry Goldsmith.
I created this arrangement with the option to be performed with reduced brass from the original setting (which is, A LOT OF BRASS).
If the piece is performed with the original brass section it would be wonderful to split the horn section on stage (1-4 on the left, 5-8 on the right).
The piece also requires a Mixed Choir (which is part of the renovation for the 100th anniversary).
I hope you will have fun playing this famous short but surely challenging opening!
Take your popcorns and have fun!
