The Symphonic Overture (for orchestra) has its roots in Julian Wagstaff's stage musical John Paul Jones, which premiered in Edinburgh, Scotland in 2001 and was revived professionally with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in 2010. Essentially a tragedy of ambition, the musical tells the story of the son of a Scottish gardener who became a hero of the American Revolution as the father of the American navy.The work is in three clearly discernible sections: The first interlaces the Scots jig in 6/8 (which opens the musical) with the anthemic 'Freedom Arise' theme in 4/4 (which closes it), by means of metric modulation. The second, slower section is essentially a canon and variation on the 'Home Again' ballad from Act I of the show, while the third and final section is a radical development of the 'Battle of Flamborough Head' sequence from Act I of the musical. The original melody was Soleado, a tune from 1974 by Ciro Dammicco (alias Zacar), composer for Italy's Daniel Sentacruz Ensemble, and Dario Baldan Bembo. The tune was based on Damicco's earlier tune Le rose blu published in 1972. The English language lyrics were written a few years later by Fred Jay (Friedrich Alex Jacobson IPI number 00015195204, who wrote many hits for Boney M such as Rasputin and Ma Baker). They do not make specific mention of Christmas. Fred Jay's lyrics have been sung by many artists, first version by Michael Holm in 1974 but most successfully by Johnny Mathis in 1976, whose version was the Christmas number one of that year in the UK.

A Marshmallow World was written in 1949 by Carl Sigman and Peter DeRose. It is commonly regarded as a Christmas song, although the lyrics make no mention of the holiday. Bing Crosby had the first hit version followed by Ray Anthony, Vic Damone, Johnny Desmond and many others. Dean Martin revived it in the 1970s and Phil Spector's version  with Darlene Love was an R&B hit. This arrangement for SATB chorus or swing choir and full orchestra features right harmony and 3 key changes  (C to Db to Eb) and a surprise ending.
