Composed by B.A. Robertson and John Barry. Arranged by Claudio Porstmann. Contemporary,Film/TV. 20 pages. Claudio Porstmann #4991661. Published by Claudio Porstmann (A0.835244).

This beautiful melody by John Barry was used for the 80s movie Somewhere in Time with Jane Seymour and Chritopher Reeve, considered by some to be the most romantic movie ever. This arrangement for string orchestra is complemented by piano which also has some solo parts like a mini piano concerto. Actually, the piece draws from two melodic sources, the main theme by John Barry, as well as a second theme composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff, who in turn wrote it as a series of variations based on a theme by Paganini. The piece itsself is not too complicated, but does need an intermediate level to be able to play; the piano part should be performed by someone with advanced intermediate skills, as it has some flashy passages.

Composed by B.A. Robertson and John Barry. Arranged by Kevin Riley. 20th Century,Broadway,Film/TV,Musical/Show. 38 pages. Kevin Riley #973354. Published by Kevin Riley (A0.1390491).

Somewhere in Time is a 1980 American romantic fantasy drama film from Universal Pictures, directed by Jeannot Szwarc, and starring Christopher Reeve, Jane Seymour, and Christopher Plummer. It is a film adaptation of the novel Bid Time Return (1975) by Richard Matheson, who also wrote the screenplay.

Reeve plays Richard Collier, a playwright who becomes obsessed with a photograph of a young woman at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan. Through self-hypnosis, he manifests himself back in time to the year 1912 to find love with actress Elise McKenna (portrayed by Seymour). He comes into conflict with Elise's manager, William Fawcett Robinson (portrayed by Plummer), who fears that romance will derail her career, and attempts to stop him.

The film is known for its musical score composed by John Barry, featuring pianist Roger Williams. The 18th variation of Sergei Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini is also used several times.

Seymour disclosed at the 2022 TCM Classic Film Festival that she and Christopher Reeve fell in love while working on the film. However, they broke up after Reeve found out his ex-girlfriend was expecting his child. Up until Reeve passed away, the two remained close friends.

The film garnered a serious cult following and in 1990 super fan Bill Shepard, founded a fan club called INSITE, the International Network of Somewhere In Time Enthusiasts

This beautiful melody by John Barry has bee arrangend to feature flutes and clarinet.

By Rita Coolidge. By John Barry and Tim Rice. Arranged by John Langley for Studio Orchestrations. Contemporary,Film/TV,Pop,Standards. 103 pages. Www.studio-orchestrations.com #977260. Published by www.studio-orchestrations.com (A0.1393788).

IMPORTANT:  Please see note below about the key of this version

This classic song by John Barry and Tim Rice originally sung by Rita Coolidge comes from Roger Moore's last Bond appearance in Octopussy. This is a film very much of its time, many dry double-entendre from our leading man for sure which might raise a Moore-like eyebrow these days.  Likewise the song here is perhaps one of the lesser played James Bond title tracks too but it is a charming departure from some of the higher octane anthems like Thunderball, Live and let die or even Goldfinger and returns us to the gentler musical era / genre of From Russia with love, For your eyes only and You only live twice.

So why not program this in your film night for singer and orchestra.  This score and parts are a semitone/half-step higher (starting in F major) which might suit some female performers slightly better for range.   The original Rita Coolidge performancxe key (starting in E major) is dusky and mellow (ie. quite low) but is also available on this website.

INSTRUMENTATION:

2 Flutes
2 Oboes
2 Clarinets
[Optional 2nd clarinet dbl. Alto Saxophone SOLO]
Alto Saxophone (SOLO)
2 Bassoons
4 French Horns
3 Trombones

Percussion [Susp.Cym. / Glock]

Electric Guitar (Lead)

Out of Africa is a 1985 American epic romantic drama film directed and produced by Sydney Pollack, and starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford. The film is based loosely on the 1937 autobiographical book Out of Africa written by Isak Dinesen (the pseudonym of Danish author Karen Blixen), with additional material from Dinesen's 1960 book Shadows on the Grass and other sources. The book was adapted into a screenplay by the writer Kurt Luedtke, and filmed in 1984. Streep played Karen Blixen, Redford played Denys Finch Hatton, and Klaus Maria Brandauer played Baron Bror Blixen. Others in the film include Michael Kitchen as Berkeley Cole, Malick Bowens as Farah, Stephen Kinyanjui as the Chief, Michael Gough as Lord Delamere, Suzanna Hamilton as Felicity, and the model and actress Iman as Mariammo. Despite mixed reviews from critics, Out of Africa was a commercial success and won seven Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director for Pollack. Wiki.
