The American Seasons
(Seasons Of An American Life)

The American Seasons (Seasons Of An American Life) is a concerto for Violin And Chamber Orchestra. Composed in 1999, the music celebrates the various stages of an American life at the waking of the 21st century. Constructed in four movements and representing four stages of life, birth, adolescence, maturity and old age, the music also pays homage to Shakespeare's Seasons Of Man His acts being seven ages, incorporated throughout the work.

Spring introduces the ideas of birth and infancy. After the principal theme has been stated, there is a violin cadenza encountering all twelve major keys and a 13/8 time signature representing the ancient golden ratio. These elements recall birth with all the possibilities a new life offers. Ending the movement, the principal theme is repeated with more complexity... as if posing life's questions.

Summer represents the excitement and bravado of youthful adolescence and young adulthood. For the style of this movement I use a happy-go-lucky Blues voice which melds into Swing. I identify swing rhythm in all of 20th century American music culture as a common thread that runs through Ragtime through Rock and Roll on to Rap. Swing means testing the waters and pushing the envelope for lovers and soldiers.

Fall is the slow movement symbolizing the wisdom of maturity. It is a peaceful theme with nostalgic strokes. It is a time for sincere reflection and enjoying ones accomplishments in life.

Winter embodies the complexities and knowledge of an older person and that of a dying person. The movement begins with the principal them from Spring, but with a dissonance that emanates from a lifetime full of emotions and responsibilities. In the middle of the movement is a transition to an old world. I use my personal ancestry from Ireland as a foundation from which to rediscover one's lineage and explore the meaning and value of a cultural legacy.

The exploration evolves into a four- and five-part fugue with a reel, jig, air, countered bass and the motif from the principal theme. All these elements, dances and melodies appear simultaneously and converge to form a unique insight to life's consequences from a historical perspective. Following the fugue, the principal theme finds its way back in. It sounds much as it did at birth. In the end, the solo violin cadenza carries the last earthly breaths before the violin and orchestra once again join in harmony to focus on a new life being transformed somewhere else. Life's four seasons in perpetuity.

Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra – Description and performance notes.

The concerto provides a challenge for the performer and is delightful to the listener. It is written in the standard three movement concerto format: fast – slow – fast.  A variety of musical colors, rhythms, and techniques are used.  The first movement begins with an Adagio section which is marked Poco Rubato, followed by Allegro for the balance of the movement.  The second movement is darker, and perhaps, a little sullen. The third movement is bright and harkens back to the guitar’s Spanish roots.  The movement is happy and light, it has an abrupt and unexpected ending. Throughout the concerto the guitarist will use a wide range of techniques.  The full sound spectrum of the guitar is utilized.  The guitarist is asked to perform several rapid arpeggios (noted as Finger Roll) wherein the performer utilizes the thumb and fingers to rapidly play the notes in a chord.  In other places, chords are to be played with three fingers playing up and the thumb to play down, using the nail (Flamenco style) – up and down referring to pitch.  In the first movement, the thumb is used to tap the sound board.  The guitar part is partially edited with suggested fingerings for clarity of intent.  The balance is left for to the performer’s interpretation.  In the second movement there is a completed tremolo section which requires the player to include the little or c finger.  The inclusion of the c finger keeps the melodic line following without interruption.  The second movement also has the melody played in artificial harmonics with the thumb playing simple a bass line. The third movement is the shortest.  It has a challenging arpeggio pattern that uses the fingers strumming up and the thumb strumming down with rapid chord changes.  The movements are in 4/4, 6/8, and 3/4 time respectively.  Duration is approx. 13:18.

Composed by Liam A. Piper-Brandon. Contemporary,World. Score and parts. 10 pages. Liam A Piper-Brandon #2881197. Published by Liam A Piper-Brandon (A0.1031068).

This is also known as my first symphony. I had written this in the ambition to get placed as a finalist in the Young Composers challenge for 2016.

This song is based around the phrase Cry Havoc and let slip the dogs of war a phrase going back to the time of William Shakespeare's play. Julius Caesar. In the scene, Mark Antony is alone with Julius Caesar's body, shortly after Caesar's assassination. In a soliloquy, he reveals his intention to incite the crowd at Caesar's funeral to rise up against the assassins. Foreseeing violence throughout Italy, Antony even imagines Caesar's spirit joining in the exhortations: ranging for revenge, with Ate by his side come hot from hell, shall in these confines with a Monarch's voice cry Havok! and let slip the dogs of war. The song is split into split into 3 parts, the intro, the march to war, and the Victory

This song is 5 minutes and 5 seconds long, and is appropriate for schools and students

Composed by Christopher Timothy Willis. Arranged by Chris Siddall. Film/TV. Score and parts. 12 pages. Chris Siddall Music Publishing #571362. Published by Chris Siddall Music Publishing (A0.965637).

2017’s The Death of Stalin tells the satirical and darkly humorous story of the days following the death of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin in 1953. Director Armando Iannucci reunites with composer Christopher Willis, who scored episodes of Veep, and would later collaborate again on The Personal History of David Copperfield. Willis evokes hallmarks of prominent Russian composers and expertly weaves them into a brilliantly cohesive and energetic score. Created from the original manuscript, this release offers a rare opportunity to study film music in its authentic, original orchestration and arrangement. An opportunity not to be missed!

Composed by Alice Mary Smith. Arranged by edited by John M Laverty. 19th Century,Classical. 147 pages. Zephyrwindmusic.com #978510. Published by zephyrwindmusic.com (A0.1395044).

British composer Alice Mary Smith (1839-1884) was in her early 20’s when she wrote her first major work, Symphony in C minor. Despite the many challenges faced by a female composer in Victorian era Great Britain, Smith’s composition received a high level of praise from the British press following the work’s premiere by the Musical Society of London in 1863. Despite this early praise, Smith never received the long-term recognization her talents deserved. Due to a number of factors, her orchestral compositions were not even published until the early 2000s.

This edition is based entirely on Smith’s original manuscript. The edition is highly edited including an update to modern instrumentation and the addition of missing/inconsistent dynamics and articulations. The original hand-written manuscript contains many additional markings in pencil (also included in this edition), apparently added after the inked manuscript was complete.

This piece was commissioned by Georges Vilson and The Kandelab Foundation. Kandelab seeks to bring awareness to Haitian Folk and Vodou music. Vilson's book, Kandelab: 101 Notated Haitian Folk and Vodou Songs are transcriptions of this music that has otherwise been handed down through an aural tradition. Vilson's descriptions of the tales that go with these melodies were a great help in setting the tone of this work. Many thanks to Vilson and Kandelab for introducing me to these wonderful melodies and rich cultural heritage.

Minis Azaka is known as the great Minister of Agriculture in Haitian Vodou. Iwa peasants bring grievances to him and also reach out to him for prosperity.

An invitation is made to a gathering along the countryside and this piece introduces a dignified Minis Azaka entering a hall adorned for his arrival. His followers trail behind him. He sits to listen to their gripes, but also joins them in dance as he is
also a well known dancer. He exits with the same reverence he entered, then disappears into the fields with his entourage. This piece expresses a veil of mystery and darkness setting the tone of great honor and respect.

The Nago drum reference is included with the parts. The pattern should be played in reference to the slash marking in the score. The reference is meant as a guide and liberty may be taken with the pattern.
