This short piece for symphony orchestra features two of the same themes previously used in the brass trio, but here they are developed in original ways. Once again, the inspiration comes from the desolate, snow-covered land of Norway. I felt the original trio material deserved to be arranged for a larger ensemble, and using strings as the main emphasis seemed most ideal. In the end, a stripped-down orchestra instrumentation was how I felt the music wanted to be heard. However, there are optional brass parts included.

Arizona Centennial Overture was commissioned by the Arizona Commission on the Arts as part of the Centennial Legacy Project to help celebrate Arizona’s centennial. There are three versions of the compositions, chamber orchestra, full orchestra, and band. The overture pays tribute to the unique blend of the various cultures that had a part in shaping Arizona into what it is today. This six and a half minute composition is divided into three main sections. The first section begins with fanfares that announce the celebration. After thirty seconds, the introduction fades into music that pays tribute to the pioneers that migrated to Arizona. The music has a rustic quality reflecting the pioneering spirit of the ranchers, farmers, miners, and merchants who came to Arizona seeking a better way of life. This section is intended to be inclusive as it is impossible to represent each culture individually in a short musical composition. The second section pays tribute to the various Native American cultures that are a large part of Arizona’s history and its present way of life. Flutes and percussion instruments are used in the beginning of this section to represent the Native American respect for nature. This quiet section evolves into a ceremonial dance that increases in intensity. Towards the end of this section one hears fragments of the pioneer melody as these culture come together. The third section is influenced by Mariachi music to recognize the Hispanic influence in Arizona. The first part uses an original rollicking tune with four beats to the measure over syncopation. The second part contains a lyrical melody with three beats to the measure accompanied by instruments playing accents that create the Hispanic sounding grouping of six notes into three groups of two alternating with two groups of three. A brief ending using the fanfares of celebration interspersed with figures from the Native American and pioneer sections brings the work to a rousing close.The score prints on legal size paper and the parts on letter.

Lyrical, melodic, harmonious, but also disturbing, tense. In the first part, the music constantly keeps us in suspense. Marked trombones keep the rhythm, and the different timbres of the instruments do not allow to calm down until the culmination of tension reaches its highest point and the lyrical part begins with a solo oboe which shows not everything as scary as it seems, later other timbres are connected until the string enters. a band that gives melodies fullness of sound. Permanent glissando horns also add fullness to the sound. Only at the end of the first and second parts are combined in major key. And the code, thanks to the unusual rhythm, shows that everything is much more complicated than it seems, but the work ends in major and it gives us hope for a better future. These studies are specifically designed for non-professional orchestras, although any orchestra will improve by playing some of these pieces during rehearsals. It is always necessary to pay attention to intonation and many other aspects of orchestral performance.In addition, these studies are also useful for orchestral conducting students. For example, it is essential to know how to conduct a simultaneous attack of a chord that does not begin on the first beat, but a eighth note after the third beat.I began writing these studies around 2013, when I took over the direction of the Bremer Orchestergemeinschaft and noticed the complete absence of repertoire of this kind. As a pianist, I am accustomed to studies by Carl Czerny or playing scales. Each individual instrumentalist knows studies of technique for their instrument. However, there are no, or at least I am not aware of, similar studies for orchestral performance technique and the specific difficulties of ensemble playing that it requires. The cycle Orchestraining aims to fill this gap.The particular study Orchestraining Nr. 01 focuses on the subject of simultaneous attacks, presenting a series of staccato chords in different parts of the bar. From the 2006 Ron Howard film adaptation of Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code, this track is taken from the soundtrack which underscores the final late night walk by Robert Langdon (played by Tom Hanks) through the streets of Paris to (possibly and hopefully) conclude his long and testing quest to seek the Holy Grail.  No spoilers however.  If you've not seen it, then add it to your playlist!The film's soundtrack evokes great emotion throughout and whatever criticisms there may have been over the years about the book, the story, the film etc.. this is definitely one of Hans Zimmer's finest emotional and thought provoking soundtrack  scores, drawing from a huge range of musical influences, from the big symphonic oceanic sounscapes to the intimate vocal solo and choral plainchant that are peppered throughout the score.  It is an example of how a soundtrack can really make a massive difference to what some might describe glibly as a popcorn movie.Very much like Time in Inception Zimmer takes a relatively simple harmonic and melodic trope and adds layers of melodic counter melody and rhythmic building to create an awe inspiring and (let's face it BIG!) climax, supporting the narrative of the film and story but also creating music that can be taken away from the cinematic experience and enjoyed for its own sake.This orchestration emulkates as closely as possible the soundtrack.  Some licence has been taken with the addition of 2 Trumpets which build the climax with the upper strings.  SATB choir is also scored as per the original soundtrack but optional as it is mostly covered by orchestral instruments and is also a very brief appearance but - at least for the sopranos - extremely challenging for anyone apart from a professional specialist choral ensemble. The synth section of the keyboard part in the opening pages can also be optional, adding some background sounds that Zimmer is so renowned for (this may be beyond the budget of some performing groups we appeciate).  However the piano cues later in the piece are highly desirable as they add a percussive support to the strings.We commend this score to anyone buidling a program of film music for their orchestral event, particularly if you are wishing to include some more modern concert ideas, and in particular a Hans Zimmer classic.INSTRUMENTATON:2 Flutes2 Oboes2 Clarinets2 Bassoons1 Contra-Bassoon (Optional)4 Horns2 Trumpets3 Trombones1 TubaTimpani2 Percussion[Cymbals/Suspp.Cymbal/Bass Drum/Tubular Bells]KeyboardSATB Choir [Optional]Strings.

Merry Christmas, Darling is a Christmas song by the Carpenters (music by Richard Carpenter, lyrics by Frank Pooler), and originally recorded in 1970.  It received a number of remixes, most notably in 1978 in a newly recorded vocal version by Karen Carpenter, which was done at her request. Richard Carpenter himself called the original recording one of his sister's very best. Hearing this song today with knowing ears and the knowledge of Karen Carepenter's mental health problems it makes a beautiful, sentimental song all the more bitter sweet and precious.  It is a perfect little gem.In this orchestration - in the original Karen Carpenter key -  there is never any heavy brass apart from 4 horns used very sparingly, and the optional original alto saxophone solo is also cued (as an alternative) for a Trumpet or Flugel horn if a sax is not available.  A guitar in this texture is always desirable but can be traded off as long as there is bass guitar, light kit and percussion to support the soupy lush string lines.The backing vocals are a significant part of the song's haunting beauty and are also highly desirable however their harmony lines are covered by alternative wind instrument figures so this can be performed with or without backing vocals.INSTRUMENTATION:2 FlutesOboeCor Anglais2 Clarinets2 Bassoons4 HornsAlto Saxophone solo (Can be played on alt. Based on a traditional Merengue tune from Dominican Republic in a Rondó style a'la Mozart, combining Mozart's Jupiter symphony 35th 4-note theme.Originally commissioned by the 'Fundación Filarmónica del Cibao' in  1997. Mozartina is an effervescent overture that paints us a contemporary Mozart, exposed to the melodic and rhythmic resources of the Caribbean identity, fusing the style and spirit of the famous Austrian with a mixed of the rhythmic and harmonic developments of the last 200 years of musical development. The work is structured as Rondo ,taking as its theme the traditional merengue (a traditional Dominican dance) El jarro 'ta pichao using it as melodic material that integrates into many styles and orchestral techniques. The topic is presented in juxtaposition with the monumental melodic motif of the last movement of the symphony ' Jupiter ' . Sometimes we appreciate it as it is , sometimes in inverted or hidden among contrapuntistic passages in striped and woven into different instrumental colors and harmonic richness coated within countless melodic modulations or put into small pieces. The climax part suddenly surrounds us with the classic merengue, where the 'tambora' (traditional dominican percussion instrument) makes appearance and gives it its soul. Meanwhile, in the background we still can hear the theme of 'Jupiter'. There briefly we can discover a 'perico ripiao' (another traditional Dominican dance)with its typical melisma embodied by the horn, we finally get to a climax that concludes with a short cadenza of 'tambora' and the reitaration of the main merengue theme in unison. The work was commissioned in 1997 for the opening concert of the Philharmonic of Cibao and this time receives his first audition by the National Symphony Orchestra.

One day over a cup of coffee, he suggested that I should look into writing/arranging works for Flex-Band - a way of scoring music so that ensembles that frequently have to deal with ‘incomplete’ instrumentation (‘incomplete’ as far as traditional concert band ensembles go) can still perform works with the guarantee that all the parts are covered and the ensemble is properly balanced. Dwarves is the first piece I wrote specifically for Flex-Band. This orchestral arrangement was made specifically for the Northshore Philharmonic Orchestra - Tracey Gibbens, conductor. I always find it fascinating yet challenging (in a good way) whenever I revisit a work/adapt and rewrite it for a different instrumentation. Dwarves was definitely no exception. While working on different chord voicing, counter melodies, and having the full pallet of orchestral timbres at my disposal, I decided to transpose the piece up to B Minor (original key of G Minor). I felt this added an extra degree of brilliance while allowing some melodies and musical ideas to be dropped an octave for a contrasting heavier low end. Dwarves is based primarily on two different themes - the A theme (minor and serious) and the B (major, a bit more uplifting). There is a ‘C’ section, but it is loosely based on a variation of the A theme.

[mi?? r?dino], translated as Dear Motherland or Dear native land) is the current national anthem of Bulgaria.There are alternative versions for Symphony & Brass Quintet in my stores.It is based on the music and text of the song Gorda Stara Planina by Tsvetan Radoslavov, written and composed as he left to fight in the Serbo-Bulgarian War in 1885. The anthem was adopted in 1964. The text has been changed many times, most recently in 1990.Between 1886 and 1944, the Bulgarian national anthem was Shumi Maritsa (???? ??????); from 1950 to 1964, it was My Bulgaria, land of heroes (Balgariyo mila, zemya na geroi, ????????? ????, ???? ?? ?????); in the brief period between these two, it was the march Republiko nasha, zdravey (????????? ????, ???????!).Originally written and composed by a Bulgarian student in 1885, as he went off to fight in the Serbo-Bulgarian war, the song was titled “????? ????? ???????” (“Gorda Stara planina”) [Proudly Rise the Balkan Peaks]. The original lyrics have undergone revisions since its original composition, the latest after the fall of the communist government in 1990 where verses not in the original lyrics speaking of friendship with Russia, the Communist Party, and fallen fighters were removed. Whether the fanfare call of Puckâ??s Dance, the sotto voce flurries evoking The Wind Over The Plains, or the deepest and highest reaches of the musical spectrum explored in the under-water world of The Sunken Cathedral, Debussyâ??s music seems to drop hints at obvious orchestral manoeuvres. His great skill, of course, was condensing these musical ideas to the piano. But the fruit is there fo the taking, and indeed other orchestrations exist of the complete suite of piano preludes â?? Books I and II. So, why another?This particular suite cherry-picks some of my own favourite movements from the suite, and arranges them in a â??symphonicâ?? structure to present an opening, expository movement (The Wind Over The Plains), a romantic Adagio (The Girl With The Flaxen Hair), a sprightly â??scherzoâ??
