Pietro Mascagniâ??s (1863â??1945) Intermezzo Sinfonico from his opera Cavalleria Rusticana needs no presentation. The idea of this edition comes from an update to an arrangement created for a friendâ??s wedding in 2010. While arranging, I stumbled upon the composerâ??s autograph of this Intermezzo, for piano solo, and decided to add a modern engraving of it to the mix. Finally, an orchestral score and a full set of parts have been included to close the circle.

There are, therefore, three versions of this piece:

• ASE 0055: for piano solo, based on the composerâ??s autograph from 1888.
• ASE 0057: arrangement for cello ensemble (min. 8 cellos), based on the piano part and not on the orchestral version, which differs greatly in dynamics and agogic marking
• ASE 0058: original orchestration, score and parts

This editionâ??s piano solo and original orchestration versions inaugurate a new series dedicated to Italian composers and/or to composers who thought about Italy while writing their music. It is called: Viva lâ??Italia!

Cavalleria rusticana ; Italian for rustic chivalry) is an opera in one act by Pietro Mascagni to an Italian libretto by Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti and Guido Menasci, adapted from an 1880 short story of the same name [it] and subsequent play by Giovanni Verga. Considered one of the classic verismo operas, it premiered on 17 May 1890 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome. Since 1893, it has often been performed in a so-called Cav/Pag double-bill with Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo.

Normally, an organ must be present for the performance of Mascagni's Intermezzo Sinfonico. The organ must support the unison passages with the harmonies. An organ on stage for - often just - this piece is not something orchestras are happy with. These parts provide an excellent alternative. 2 clarinets and 2 bassoons provide an ideal sound where the conductor can still choose to play the parts like a static organ, with no dynamic differences, or that the wind section moves along with the dynamic line of the strings. The dynamics of the strings are reflected in the wind parts, making it an easy choice for the performers.

Be aware that this product only contains woodwind 'organ' parts for: 2x clarinets in A/Bb and 2x bassoons.

This is a music of great beauty and exuberance. In this new arrangement, based on the Berlin edition: Bote & Bock, and the Kalmus edition, the arranger Flavio Regis Cunha sought to follow Mascagni's intentions when orchestrating his Easter Hymn for full orchestra. There is nothing like this original orchestration, where there are creative and powerful passages for brasses and woodwinds and a string background during the middle section. The work ends in a majestic and grandiose way with the woods and strings in the high register, together with the beauty, the brightness and the impact of the Timpani and the brasses. This score is certainly a great addition for your orchestra. You and your orchestra will love playing this piece. Your audience will be delighted. The work will be well received and can be used in the Easter period or in services.
