Humdinger was written in March 2010.  Duration:  4 minutes 42 seconds.

This piece was specially written for and dedicated to Gary Woolf and the Banda di Musica in Emsdetten, Germany. It is fast, lively, tuneful and comical, with a very mischievous character. It could be enjoyed by both students and professionals alike. It was inspired by a nail biting dash through Frankfurt airport in order to just about catch a plane!

There are three arrangements available:

No.1  School arrangement: for Violin 1, Violin 2, Violin 3, Cello 1 and Cello

No.2  Standard: for Violin 1, violin 2, viola, cello and double bass

No.3  Youth Orchestra Arrangement:

In May 2019 I completed an orchestration for Youth orchestra for this piece. The instrumentation is as follows:

Flutes 1&2, 1 Oboe, Clarinets 1&2 in Bflat, 1 Bflat Bass Clarinet, 1 Bassoon, 1 Alto Saxophone.

Trumpets 1&2 in Bflat, 1 Tenor Trombone.

Maracas, Snare Drum (with brushes), Tambourine, Triangle, Xylophone.

Violins 1,2&3, Viola (same as violin 3 part), Cellos 1&2, Double Bass (same as Cello 2 part).

1992 – The Mini Concerto For Alex, for solo cello (about grade 6 or 7) and school orchestra was commissioned in 1992 by Ibstock Place School for a talented young cellist, Alex Hunt, who was a student at the school at the time.  The Head of the school’s music department was Chris Artley, who was a marvelous support to me, throwing my way many wonderful opportunities or orchestrate for the Ibstock Place orchestra. The Mini Concerto For Alex is just one example. Chris is now a very successful composer living and working in New Zealand!

Duration: approx. 10 minutes.
In one movement, this piece is light in character and great fun for a school orchestra with a young, aspiring cellist.

This piece is inspired by Terry Riley's In C. Repetitions is a solo for found objects and The Repeater Orchestra, a free program online that mimics live sounds in real time, and plays them back in a stereo/spacial environment. It has non-standard notation in a way, with single bits written on a staff arranged in an order to play them. The player is given freedom to repeat things as many times as they want, making the piece possible to play in under 2 minutes, to well into the dozens. In my interpretation (shown in the YouTube video), it takes around 11 minutes. This piece is about making a soundscape of repeated patterns, and overlapping and combining them to create one conglomerate. 

Instruments include: planks of wood, a bucket of water, ceramic tiles, a glass bottle with marbles in it, a can, and a separate glass bottle for hitting.
Implements include: a 2 paintbrush, a ring, rubber xylophone mallets, and oak dowel rods with Moleskin wrapped on one tip. Note, I apologize for the feedback near the first third of the recording, I had to adjust the settings, and did not hear the feedback as hard as the computer did!
