The film “Such Subtleties� (written by Hannah Beets, directed by Lucas Kitchen, produced by Press On Ministries and Media Kitchen Films) is an independent film created in 2010 by members of Kilgore Bible Church (Kilgore, Texas). The film tells the story of two sisters coming of age and how the decisions they make impact their lives and the lives of those around them. I was honored to have been asked to write the score for this project. The version of the score presented here contains all of the music cues from the film arranged for a concert setting. The work is not necessarily intended to be performed in its entirety; movements may be selected or omitted by choice. If movements 2 or 31 are included in the performance, note that an Electric Guitar and Electric Bass Guitar are needed for movement 2, and a Vocalist is needed for movement 31.

The hurricane, however, did form near Africa which makes me consider it to be a cyclone. On August 27, 1900, Galveston, Texas would feel a punch that would knock down every single building. This piece represents that with swirling woodwinds, tornadic brass, and frightening percussion. In the center of the piece, there is a calm chorale to represent the eye of the storm. After that, it goes back to the evil cyclone themes.

It has a climax near the end that has made it very popular with the Williamson County Symphony Orchestra for whom it was written. Audiences have commented that it brings chill bumps or tears. Time of performance is 4:50. It is fairly easy to play, and was selected by two junior all-region orchestras in Texas. However, to obtain the best results, a mature orchestra is recommended in order  to pull off the big climax near the end.

Published by Dacker Music (A0.814731). The music of Paisano Suite was composed in 1982 for the Austin Ballet Theatre on a grant from the City of Austin. The resulting ballet was produced in February, 1983 under the title Ballabile, with choreography by ABT Artistic Director Stanley Hall.This music was originally scored for a small pit orchestra, and it was only in 2012 that it was shortened and re-orchestrated to create this suite for full orchestra. Since the original title is a term used specifically for dance music, and the new version of the work is meant to be a concert suite rather than a ballet, it was also re-titled after the Paisano Ranch, in the central Texas Hill Country, where it was originally composed and which served as its inspiration.The entire nearly twenty-minute suite is actually based on a fairly modest amount of musical material and the eight short movements are thematically all very closely related.
