The work has been transcribed for piano, 4 hands, for the Duo Pianismo recital in Benetatou Cultural Center of Psihiko in 2010 and for wind quintet for the Q innegal Wind Quintet Concerts in Athens in 2011 (Attikon OdeionConservatory, Art Gallery Café, Athens, Perigiali Theater, Korinthos). This new work was premiered at the Royal Albert Hall at The Coronation Prom on the date of His Majesty The King's Coronation by soprano Joanne Lunn and the All Souls Orchestra.  This imaginative arrangement of 'When I Survey the Wondrous Cross' with the final verse of 'Love Divine, All Loves Excelling' for soprano solo and orchestra begins with a pianissimo muted string texture as we fix our eyes upon the cross of Christ before crescendoing to a glorious finale in which we lay our crowns before the King of all Creation.  This would be a perfect addition to a concert with full symphony orchestra and a soprano soloist with an extensive vocal range.  If desired, the top vocal C in the final verse in bar 123 may be replaced by holding the top A across the full beat.

I am not talking about just one spark either, but a series that beautifully led me to the creation of my piece. After seeing the 2022 MetSO program it was evident that it lightly using the Brass players, and I knew they were feeling a bit underutilised. Which sparked the first idea in my mind to write a piece that would take full advantage of their skills, and heavily use brass instruments. The program coincided with the 45th Anniversay of the Orchestra which started it life as the Karrinyup Symphony Orchestra. Rekindling the orchestra’s relationship with the City of Stirling and returning to the City of Stirling as a rehearsal venue in 2023, was another spark of inspiration which led me towards the piece’s naming… the ‘Karrinyup Fanfare’. The last spark of inspiration was a query inside my mind. The opening of the piece contrasts two somewhat conflicting meanings of the word Karrinyup. During an Aboriginal Studies unit, I discovered that Karrinyup is a Noongar word that translates to “the place where there are spiders�. However, this differs from the City of Stirling official meaning of the name Karrinyup on the website. It states the word means “the place where Kangaroos drink�, possibly because it sounds much more pleasant and doesn’t inspire the fear that spiders often do. It was this contrary interpretation of the word ‘Karrinyup’ which provided the final spark of inspiration I needed for this composition. You see, when you listen to the opening, the theme jumps up and down through the horns, and represents the Kangaroo – Yongka. Whilst as the fanfare continues, you will notice the second theme – the crawling strings represent the spider – Kar. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did creating it. May it, and this new year, spark inspiration for you.

On one hand it tells the classic story of Ikarus who, ignoring the warnings of his father, flew too close to the sun and died. On the other hand it pays homage to the inventiveness of the human spirit and embraces mankind’s ability, through the creation of complicated machines, to achieve more than our mortal bodies would allow.The music starts softly with Ikarus preparing for his take-off. Slowly the huge wings unfold and the piece lifts off with a majestic theme/motif. The nervous sixteen notes in the string section symbolize the constant flow of air and motion needed by Ikarus to fly.The joy of movement is mirrored by the cellos and bassoons, gliding in and out of the orchestra. Sounds of birds, clouds and impressions of earth from above are represented by various short melodic or rhythmic fragments throughout the first phase of his flight.Slowly the intensity and excitement builds until we are completely swept away and have lost all sense of reason or danger. Then, in the climax of the composition, Ikarus and his wings crash to the ground and the orchestra brakes down with him, loosing feather after feather until all has been destroyed. It represents a wedding between Doña Lucrecia de Castilla and Don Tomás Rainer with the intention of making an alliance between Turkey and Spain. The investigation of this dance and its original music was made possible thanks to Aracely Sánchez  (cultural researcher),  Marcial Gudiel (folkloric dance researcher), and Concepción Clará de Guevara (anthropologist) for the creation of the work “Panchimalco� in 1982 work that was commissioned by the National Dance School of El Salvador “Morena Celarié�. The editors of the “Diccionario de la Música Española e Hispanoamericana� (Dictionary of Spanish and Hispanic Music) found this dance was unique in its genre in America and the Caribbean making “Los Chapetones� something exclusive from El Salvador.  For this work, a part of each one of the sones is transformed in its rhythm or intervals to put them in melodies or in lines for the bass that have been harmonized in a different way while interacting with themes created especially for this work. The title, which in Nahuat means to marry, also serves as a reference to the union between the traditional themes used and the composer’s own musical language. Munamiktia (To marry) was written for the Salvadoran Composers Competition organized by the Pan American Symphony Orchestra (PASO) in Washington, DC. Given its originality, the Jury decided, after a long deliberation, to award it second place. The World Premiere will take place during their 21/22 season after PASO resumes activities due to COVID.* The actual World Premiere took place on March 25th, 2023 in Washington D.C. On that day, amid accompanying splendour, the music-loving Grand Duke Michail Nikolaievich (1832-1909), youngest brother of Tsar Alexander II, married Princess Caecilie of Baden (1839-91), daughter of Archduke Leopold of Baden. Johann Strauss, who at that time was giving a summer season of concerts in nearby Pavlovsk, used the opportunity occasioned by the event to enhance his already enviable popularity with the Russian royal family and composed the Caecilien-Polka in honour of the lovely young bride. Indeed, it is clear from a letter which Johann wrote in late July 1857 to Carl Haslinger, his publisher in Vienna, that the new polka had been prepared well in advance of the wedding (the fair copy of the full orchestral score made for the publisher's engraver is dated 9 August) and was enjoying success even before the royal couple's official engagement on 16August 1857. Sometime after performing the Caecilien-Polka in Pavlovsk, Johann despatched the work to the Austrian capital where his brother Josef conducted its Viennese première, together with that of Johann's waltz Telegraphische Depeschen (op. 195, Volume 28), at his own benefit concert in the Volksgartenon Sunday 18 October 1857. The Wiener Allgemeine Theaterzeitung (16.10.1857) remarked that both works have caused a sensation in St. Petersburg and are truly genial Viennese sounds full of verve and melody. Since tradition demanded that the German Princess Caecilie adopt a Russian name - Olga Feodorovna - before her marriage, so Johann's Caecilien-Polka also underwent a change of identity. On 8 December 1857 Carl Haslinger announced the publication of Strauss's Olga-Polka, on the title page of which is the inscription: Dedicated to her Imperial Highness Grand Duchess Olga, née Princess of Baden. It was under this title, too, that Johann himself first conducted the work in Vienna at a concert in the Volksgarten on 1 November 1857, shortly after his return from Russia.
