Sadly and unjustly neglected over the years, this excellent piece contains some lovely themes which are complemented by bold harmonic progressions, all in a truly romantic style.
Raff works were regularly played during his lifetime and much admired by his contemporaries, but have dropped out of fashion. Let's hope that this can help to bring them back to public notice.

This opening extract from Verdi's Ernani is a suitably dramatic and energetic piece for chorus and orchestra. It will fit into an opening section of an opera fiesta, while being less known than many others.
While Ernani is not well known these days, it was first performed on 9 March 1844, and it was immensely popular, and was revived countless times during its early years. It became Verdi's most popular opera until it was superseded by Il trovatore after 1853. In 1904, it became the first opera to be recorded completely.

Marschner is probably best known for his opera Der Vampyr, but deserves to be played more as his music is powerful and dramatic - in the best Romantic tradition and very similar to Weber's.
This overture is no exception - full of energy, drama and reflection too! 
I believe this to be the only modern score and set of parts to be published - but stand to be corrected!

Carl Heinrich Hübler was born in Wachwitz, near Dresden on 4th December 1822 and was the horn player in the Dresden Royal Court orchestra from 1844 until his retirement in 1891.
This Caprice on the theme from Bellini's Souvenir de la Sonnambule is a delightful addition to the repertoire that deserves to be performed much more often and demonstrates Hübler's knowledge of orchestration as well as an intimate connection to the solo instrument.
He also wrote a Concerto for Four Horns after being inspired by hearing Schumann's Koncertstück for Four Horns in a private performance which Schumann attended. There is also a Horn Concerto.

Carl Maria von Weber needs no introduction, but his overture Abu Hassan is relatively little known. From the start, it is typical of his writing - set firmly in the Romantic genre with just enough Turkish references to make the work fascinating. A short work, but delightful and satisfying at the same time.

This overture to the unknown (these days) romantic opera by Flotow deserves to be performed - being full of melodies and varied textures. It was previously in an innaccurate and hard to read form, which has now been tidied and corrected into a modern typeface.

Rübezahl is seen to be the guardian of the Krkonoše Mountains. Physically, his appearance varies; he can take any form he wishes, from an old grandma to a giant crossing his mountains with one step. (Wikipedia).

A most interesting and colourful overture from an interesting and colourful composer! I have never heard this work performed - rather unjustly as it is full of Tchaikovsky's typical style and verve. It has suitable challenges for all players which should prove worth while.

Kuhlau is best known for his piano music, but he has quite a collection of relatively unknown instrumental music too.
This overture to the opera William Shakespeare is full of colour, drama and invention. It was previously in a set of innaccurate parts with no score available. These have now been edited and typeset in a modern edition and are eminently playable. Enjoy.

A fabulous and clever work by Parry - a somewhat unjustly neglected composer who has been under the shadow of Elgar and (his pupil) Vaughan Williams. Well known for Jerusalem and several hymn tunes, but is also an amazing composer and orchestrator.

The music of Joachim Raff was, rightly, very popular in his lifetime but is rather (unjustly) ignored more recently.

This concert overture has echoes of Brahms and Dvorak in its writing and is full of lyrical, expressive themes that strike a chord with those who overcome their prejudice. The orchestration is mostly rewarding and enjoyable to perform.

Charles Goundod is best known for his Petite Symphony and his opera Faust. This Danse Romaine is a dramatic and lively addition to the regular repertoire for orchestra and deserves to be performed more regularly.
This edition removes many of the irregularities in the articulations and dynamics that exist in the original one.
