Composed by Franz X. Gruber. Arranged by Tito Abeleda. Christmas. Score and parts. 69 pages. Visionary Quest Records #4895613. Published by Visionary Quest Records (A0.984555).

To understand why I composed this arrangement of Silent Night, Holy Night in the way that I did, close your eyes and imagine taking a holy journey or pilgrimage to visit the Holy Nativity. I musically convey what I imagined it would have been like to make this long journey like the Three Wise Kings and others did to follow the Star of Bethlehem to see the Blessed Child that prophets had foretold. As each person begins the journey, you will hear the distinctly grave motif indicative of the quest that was before them. The brass gloriously herald one's approach to the Holy Nativity coupled with the commencement of the Silent Night, Holy Night carol theme upon one's arrival.

The music Silent Night, Holy Night was originally composed in 1818 by Franz X. Gruber. The original lyrics were were written in German by James Mohr also in 1818. This Christmas Classic was translated to English in 1859 by John Young. I wrote this arrangement yesterday as an intermediate level piano solo. This is a re-imagined version of Franz Gruber's Christmas Carol classic Silent Night, Holy Night. Section A begins with a poignant introduction in C Minor, then modulates to C Major for the main Silent Night, Holy Night Christmas Carol theme in Section B. Section C returns to a new version of its introductory C Minor motif. The song segues back to its Silent Night, Holy Night theme, but modulating to D Major for its closing.

F. Gruber's Silent Night, Holy Night (for Full Orchestra) Arranged by Tito Abeleda (1964 - ). Digital Download = 70 pages. Duration = 4 minutes 42 seconds.

Composed by Keith Gemmell. 20th Century,Contemporary,Instructional. Score and parts. 93 pages. Keith Gemmell #28213. Published by Keith Gemmell (A0.852743).

This is a modern classical piece in a minimalist style although, unusually for this type of music, with strong melodic passages. Unlike the music of Steve Reich, Phillip Glass and John Adams, it is not technically difficult to play, although a degree of concentration is required when following the shifting patterns. Although minimalist in character the music is constantly changing. It opens quietly with just tubular bells, piano and oboe before ebbing and flowing through grandiose melodies, simple minimalist riffs and sweeping string portamentos. After a rousing full orchestra tutti the music gradually winds down until, like at the the beginning, we hear just piano and tubular bells, which end the piece. As mentioned above it is not difficult to play and suitable for professional and amateur orchestras alike. Perform this and remind your audience that we stand, live and breathe on God’s Earth.

Composed by Carson Cooman. Contemporary. Score and parts. 54 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3037087. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533667).

Pittsburgh Concerto (2005) was written for the Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic and is
dedicated to Amy Stabenow, concert manager at Carnegie Mellon’s School of Music. The
piece was conceived as a tribute to the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.
The work contains only two specific “programmatically inspired” images related to
Pittsburgh. They form the outer two sections of the work. The inner four sections are
inspired more abstractly by various aspects of the city, its landscapes, and its people; they
feature a series of solos and duets for many members of the orchestra – in the manner of a
“concerto for orchestra.”
The opening of the work is inspired by Pittsburgh’s history as America’s steel capital.
Colors and sounds of the clangorous industrial age of America’s past are evoked. The basic
musical material (a six-note cell) for the entire work is presented in this aggressive
introduction. Throughout the rest of the work, this basic material is developed in ways that
range from lushly romantic to aggressively athletic.
The following section is marked “slow, lush” and features a duet first between trumpet and
tuba, over warm harmonies in the orchestra. A brief duet for vibraphone and marimba leads
to an extended viola solo.
The next section is fast and energetic. It begins with an athletic duet for English horn and
bass trombone, followed by a ringing duet of tubular bells and crotales. The final solo is for
violin, as the orchestral texture disintegrates around it.
The next section, marked “slow, mystical”, begins with a duet between piano and bass
clarinet. A passionate horn duo follows before a passage for solo bass leads directly into the
next section.
This section is fragmentary and halting. An unpitched duo of bass drum and flexatone
begins, leading to an aggressive and abortive duet between solo flute and bassoon. Finally,
an extended cello solo closes the section.
The final part of the work is inspired by my first visit to Pittsburgh. When driving in from
Pittsburgh airport (which is far outside the city), the city itself is “hidden” from the road by
hills. Upon reaching the hills, one enters the Fort Pitt tunnel and, after a few moments,
emerges from it on a suspension bridge over the Monongahela River. Late at night, this was
a truly breathtaking moment as the city and its rivers emerged suddenly in a mass of glittering
lights. The ecstatic rush of the lighted city at night is portrayed in this section – amidst
fragments from the opening, recalling the industrial past, now transformed into something
new.

Composed by Alessio Niccolai. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 136 pages. Alessio Niccolai #5896511. Published by Alessio Niccolai (A0.1029543).

Pulcinella - Parte 1 is a composition for symphony orchestra and SATB choir built on an old french doggerel: it's a sometimes funny, lively and bubbly piece, sometimes melancholic and poignant: exactly like the Neapolitan mask that it intends to celebrate.
For its performance a complete symphonic ensemble and a chorus of great dramatic intensity are required. Correctly with the creative style of its author, Pulcinella (Polichinelle in French) also needs glockenspiel, tubular bells and xylophone, as well as a couple of harps.
There is talk of «Part 1» because a sequel is currently in reworking and is intended for the subtitle of «Part 2»  originally - when, at the age of 16 - Alessio Niccolai conceived it as a musical jotting, He intended it as a unique work. Since there were two main thematic guidelines, at the time of his transcription for orchestra and choir, he decided to separate them.

Miacomet Dreaming (2008) for orchestra is dedicated to Loretta Yoder and Kyle Latshaw. The title refers to Miacomet, a region of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. This work is one of a variety of pieces deeply connected to the landscape of Nantucket. The inspiration for the work was an oil painting, Path to Miacomet (2006), by Loretta Yoder; its fervency of color and landscape provided the poetic image that drives the work. The music itself was worked out during a the early hours of darkness on the actual beach of Miacomet. As the sun set, and darkness covered the landscape, only the passionate sound of the surf remained. The music is fervent and searching in tone. It begins with a roar before quieting down to introduce its basic musical material-a simple lament-like theme in a folkinflected style. This material is used for further explorations, building to passionate climaxes. Finally, the opening music returns, but this time it is whispered. The movement winds down to a distant and reposed conclusion. Composed by Carson Cooman. Contemporary. Score and parts. 34 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3035625. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533654).

Commissioned by and is dedicated to trombonist Haim Avitsur. Throughout the work, the trombone is placed into a variety of different musical contexts—sometimes with bleakness and sometimes with warmth. The work begins with the tubular bells alone, presenting the principal musical material of the work. The strings enter with a suspended tapestry, through which the trombone plays its opening melodies. In this section, the trombone has a cantorial role—singing and interacting with the orchestra. These opening musical ideas are developed as the trumpet, horn, and clarinet join the trombone in soloistic roles. A signal gesture on the trumpet is heard once, interrupting the tapestry. When the signal is heard again, the music accelerates into the second section. The second section is fast and bell-like as the trombone sings excited lines through ringing masses of sound. Whirring figurations emerge in the winds and are picked up by the strings. The section
grows wilder until it climaxes in hammer chords. From this, the trumpet, bells, and trombone emerge—maintaining and propelling the energy of the
section. Gradually, the energy is released, leading into the third section. The third section is chorale-like, combining again suspended sounds in the strings with harmonic motion in the winds in brass. The trombone again plays a cantorial role. A build up of energy occurs at the end of this section, leading into the fourth and final section—the cadenza. The trombone bursts into the cadenza, not with a forceful shout, but with a whisper. The work winds down to its conclusion—without a loss of speed or energy, but rather by the increase of silence. Instrumentation: 2111/1100/timp/1perc/soloTbn/strings The score by itself is available as another item. The parts are on rental from the publisher.

Composed by Hans Zimmer. Arranged by John Langley / Studio Orchestrations. Classical,Contemporary,Film/TV,Religious,Thriller. 102 pages. Www.studio-orchestrations.com #1010904. Published by www.studio-orchestrations.com (A0.1430275).

From the 2006 Ron Howard film adaptation of Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code, this track is taken from the soundtrack which underscores the final late night walk by Robert Langdon (played by Tom Hanks) through the streets of Paris to (possibly and hopefully) conclude his long and testing quest to seek the Holy Grail.  No spoilers however.  If you've not seen it, then add it to your playlist!

The film's soundtrack evokes great emotion throughout and whatever criticisms there may have been over the years about the book, the story, the film etc.. this is definitely one of Hans Zimmer's finest emotional and thought provoking soundtrack  scores, drawing from a huge range of musical influences, from the big symphonic oceanic sounscapes to the intimate vocal solo and choral plainchant that are peppered throughout the score.  It is an example of how a soundtrack can really make a massive difference to what some might describe glibly as a popcorn movie.

Very much like Time in Inception Zimmer takes a relatively simple harmonic and melodic trope and adds layers of melodic counter melody and rhythmic building to create an awe inspiring and (let's face it BIG!) climax, supporting the narrative of the film and story but also creating music that can be taken away from the cinematic experience and enjoyed for its own sake.

This orchestration emulkates as closely as possible the soundtrack.  Some licence has been taken with the addition of 2 Trumpets which build the climax with the upper strings.

SATB choir is also scored as per the original soundtrack but optional as it is mostly covered by orchestral instruments and is also a very brief appearance but - at least for the sopranos - extremely challenging for anyone apart from a professional specialist choral ensemble.

The synth section of the keyboard part in the opening pages can also be optional, adding some background sounds that Zimmer is so renowned for (this may be beyond the budget of some performing groups we appeciate).  However the piano cues later in the piece are highly desirable as they add a percussive support to the strings.

We commend this score to anyone buidling a program of film music for their orchestral event, particularly if you are wishing to include some more modern concert ideas, and in particular a Hans Zimmer classic.
