ATON is a stage play written by Manfred Strolz and Otmar Rützler which represents Egypt in the time of the Pharoahs but seen through the eyes of modern theatre directors and actors. The modern scenes are spoken but the Egyptian scenes require music, so Manfred and Otmar asked me to write the music for these. The music is composed for various forces as the play progresses, from the full orchestra (woodwind, strings, harp, piano, timpani) and choir down to more intimate moments with single voice or duets, flute and classical guitar or with single voice and bassoon. For each section the pdf file contains score and parts and the sound sample is an electronic preview.

Published by Arkady Leytush (A0.1430086). This orchestral suite was composed by me from three numbers of Transcendental Etudes, op. 11 S. Lyapunov - Berceuse, Rondo des Sylphes & Lesghinka. These three different plays combine perfectly due to their contrasts and different artistic images. Translating these virtuoso opuses to a full orchestra, I had to deal with many technical difficulties purely for the piano, which had to be adapted for the orchestra, while I had to create new lines and voices and even compose something. This work completely captivated me with the talent, ingenuity and delightful imagination of its author. I am sure that this composition could decorate many orchestral programs, giving them freshness and great emotional intensity.

As a new idea is introduced, it is layered upon the previously stated ideas, introduced by the additional disruption of an additional beat, always to return.The formal structure is a relatively simple contrapuntal exercise, eventually expanding to 6 layers/species, from which the piece, while still growing dynamically, begins to thin out horizontally while adding a bit more harmonic interest (often through dissonance).Eventually, as the tessitura of the orchestra rises and the mass of sound and layers becomes simply too much to tolerate, the march repents into a peaceful ending.The work includes parts for Alto, Tenor and Baritone Saxophones, as well as Euphonium.This selection is the score only.
