Early Autumn (1949) is a song composed by Ralph Burns and Woody Herman with lyrics by Johnny Mercer. The song grew out of the fourth segment of Burns' “Summer Sequence� concert piece and was originally recorded by the Herman band on December 27, 1947 with an outstanding eight-bar solo by saxophonist Stan Getz. Herman asked Johnny Mercer to write lyrics in 1952 and he re-recorded the song taking the vocal duties himself. Charted versions were by Woody Herman and by Jo Stafford, both in 1952. This arrangement is for Flute Quartet and full orchestra.

This cue, titled “Kicked Out� on the manuscript but known as “Truck Drive� on the OST takes place as our hero Sam (Jonathan Pryce) and the woman from his dreams Jill (Kim Greist) flee from government agents. During the frantic chase, we hear hints of Ary Barroso’s “Aquarela do Brasil� which, known simply as “Brazil� to British audiences, is a recurring theme throughout and gives its name to the title of the film. Created from the original manuscript, this release offers a rare opportunity to study film music in its authentic, original orchestration and arrangement. An opportunity not to be missed!
