Full Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1464081 By David Bowie. By David Bowie. Arranged by Kevin Riley. 20th Century,Pop. 42 pages. Kevin Riley #1042792. Published by Kevin Riley (A0.1464081). Life on Mars? is a song by the English singer-songwriter David Bowie, first released on his 1971 album Hunky Dory. Bowie wrote the song as a parody of Frank Sinatra's My Way. Life on Mars? was recorded on 6 August 1971 at Trident Studios in London, and was co-produced by Bowie and Ken Scott. Bowie's backing band consisted of guitarist and string arranger Mick Ronson, bassist Trevor Bolder, drummer Mick Woodmansey and Strawbs member Rick Wakeman on piano. Life on Mars? is primarily a glam rock ballad, with elements of cabaret and art rock; it has a complex structure that includes chord changes throughout. The lyrics are about a girl who goes to a cinema to escape reality, and include surreal images that reflect optimism and the effects of Hollywood. At the height of Bowie's fame as Ziggy Stardust, RCA Records issued Life on Mars? as a single on 22 June 1973 in the United Kingdom, where it peaked at number three. To promote the single, photographer Mick Rockfilmed a video that shows Bowie in make-up and a turquoise suit singing the song against a white backdrop. Bowie frequently performed Life on Mars? during his concerts and the song has appeared on numerous compilation albums. Scott remixed the song in 2003 and 2016, the latter being a stripped down mix.Life on Mars? is considered by commentators as one of Bowie's greatest songs, and one of the best songs of all time. Critics have praised Bowie's vocal performance and growth as a songwriter. The song's title was given to the British television series Life on Mars, and films and other television programmes have included Life on Mars?. Artists including Barbra Streisand, and Nine Inch Nails members Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, have recorded cover versions of the song; and following Bowie's death in 2016, Life on Mars? was frequently chosen as a tribute to the artist.

Full Orchestra - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.852743 Composed by Keith Gemmell. 20th Century,Contemporary,Instructional. Score and parts. 93 pages. Keith Gemmell #28213. Published by Keith Gemmell (A0.852743). This is a modern classical piece in a minimalist style although, unusually for this type of music, with strong melodic passages. Unlike the music of Steve Reich, Phillip Glass and John Adams, it is not technically difficult to play, although a degree of concentration is required when following the shifting patterns. Although minimalist in character the music is constantly changing. It opens quietly with just tubular bells, piano and oboe before ebbing and flowing through grandiose melodies, simple minimalist riffs and sweeping string portamentos. After a rousing full orchestra tutti the music gradually winds down until, like at the the beginning, we hear just piano and tubular bells, which end the piece. As mentioned above it is not difficult to play and suitable for professional and amateur orchestras alike. Perform this and remind your audience that we stand, live and breathe on God’s Earth.

Full Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.869355 Composed by Thomas Oboe Lee. 20th Century,Classical,Contemporary,Jazz,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 73 pages. Thomas Oboe Lee #15875. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869355). Instrumentation: solo alto saxophone & 2222-4231-perc-drumset-strings. Program note. Maestro Max Hobart called me in the spring of 2009 and told me to check out this young jazz phenom on the saxophone named Grace Kelly. I said OK, that’s cool. That summer we went to the Regatta Bar in Harvard Square to hear her play with her band, and I was duly impressed by her musicality, soulfulness and chops. Max asked if I would be interested in writing a concerto for her and the Wellesley Symphony. I said, Sure. It sounds like a great idea. One of the most cherished jazz records in my vast collection is the collaboration between Stan Getz and Eddie Sauter entitled Focus. Eddie, who used to be an arranger for the Benny Goodman Band in the forties, went on to create the Sauter Finegan Band in the early fifties. The band was one of the first to include the piccolo, oboe, bassoon, harp, celesta, French horn, tuba, xylophone, glockenspiel, chimes, timpani, and other unusual symphonic instruments in the standard big band format of trumpets, trombones, saxophones and rhythm section of piano, bass and drum set. On the album Focus Eddie Sauter composed seven tracks of music for string orchestra and rhythm section. Stan Getz did not have a written part - he just improvised over the written music. If you are not familiar with this recording, then you will do yourself a huge favor if you go find it and add it to your own CD collection. The music is phenomenal and Stan is on top of his game, soaring above the strings with endless melodic inventions, flights of imagination and whimsy! It is one of those desert island CDs one should not be without. When I emailed Grace about this project and mentioned Stan Getz’s Focus, she said, It’s one of my favorite albums. So, we got off on a positive note immediately. My work, Focus on Grace … Concerto for Jazz Saxophone and Orchestra, is very much inspired both by the Stan Getz album and by the performances I heard of Grace and her band. The first movement is based on a funk groove in D minor: Grace’s part is initially written-out but she improvises freely in the coda. The second movement is a boss nova: as in the Stan Getz album, Grace does not have a written part but improvises over a set of chord changes provided by the orchestra. The third and last movement is an Afro-Cuban groove in six-eight: Grace has a written melody at first but soon launches into improvisation on a 12-bar blues in F. She ends the concerto in a free cadenza to show off her virtuosity and saxophone chops. ENJOY!!!

Full Orchestra - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1024919 Composed by Garrett Melick. Contemporary. Score and parts. 82 pages. Moof Miser #4355557. Published by Moof Miser (A0.1024919). The Wayfinder, a small ship floating aimlessly through space. This song is the story of their adventures as they explore the galaxy. Variations on a Theme: Wayfinder was written in response to what felt like a general lack of more showy, almost cinematic tunes available publicly for full orchestra, at least ones that weren't arrangements of other movie songs. Wayfinder provides a song that's both fun to play and listen to, while also offering a fair challenge to younger high school orchestra groups to make sure they are listening to other members of the orchestra and keeping their parts balanced between them. It is suggested that, when rehearsing this piece, one emphasize a focus on listening carefully, as well a careful balance between parts played staccato and legato, as well as to bring attention to the multiple tempo changes that occur throughout the piece. .

Orchestra - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q6453 In memoriam Robert Schumann. Composed by Aribert Reimann. This edition: study score. Music Of Our Time. Downloadable, Study score. Duration 14 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q6453. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6453). This most frequently played orchestral work by Aribert Reimann quotes from and makes use of Robert Schumann's last finished composition, the so-called 'Geistervariationen' [Ghost Variations] in E flat major for piano from 1854, composed shortly before Schumann's suicide attempt. Reflecting on Schumann's subsequent life in Endenich, Reimann leaves the lyrical character of the original unchanged. But the breaking up of the theme into the third, fifth and seventh fragments symbolizes the transition from dreamy imagination to sickly brooding.

Full Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.755203 Composed by Sy Brandon. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 253 pages. Sy Brandon #3415579. Published by Sy Brandon (A0.755203). Legacy is a three movement composition for chamber orchestra that makes social commentary on the issue of global warming. It was commission and premiered by the Washington Sinfonietta, Rufus Jones, conductor. I. Conflicts - This movement begins with a cry from native cultures admonishing our neglect of the environment. The cry is interspersed with debate regarding the seriousness of global warming (woodwinds). The debate grows stronger as the cries grow weaker. The debate is quieted by a measure of repeated chords that could be the words, stop it! stop it now!. A weak cry in the English Horn brings the introduction to a close. An Allegro section follows with a rhythmic and primitive sounding section representing the underdeveloped nations that are destroying the rain forests for economic gain. This material evolves into a more harmonic and contrapuntal section representing industrialized nations reluctant to change, also for economic reasons. Things quiet down as the music takes the listener to another part of the globe, East Asia. Conflict is again present in this section. The music returns to a varied restatement of the industrialized nations music before traveling to India for a section influenced by Raga. This section builds in dissonance until we hear the repeated stop it now chords from the introduction. A brief reprise of the cries bring the movement to a close. II. Consequences - This movement evokes a somber mood that is reflective of living in a climate of extremes. The movement is in arch form as it begins and ends with open harmony reflective of barren lands that once were fertile. The middle section serves as a climax expressive the harshness of the climate. Colleen McCollough’s book, A Creed for the Third Millennium was a source of inspiration for this movement. III. Sacrifice and Compromise - The movement begins with a strong section that suggests progress. It is followed by a quieter and intense section that alternates lyrical lines over a staccato ostinato that creates a sense of urgency. The opening section returns and is followed by a development of the ostinato section. This section is symbolic of how ideas need to be adapted in order for progress to be made. The opening section returns once more before leading into the concluding section where there is coming together of the instruments on a long lyrical line representing more and more people working together for change. The movement ends with a sense of triumph over adversity. The score prints on legal size paper and the parts on letter.

Chamber Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.922635 Composed by Johann Strauss Jr. Arranged by Aaron Meier. Romantic Period,World. Score and parts. 7 pages. Aaron Meier #5792353. Published by Aaron Meier (A0.922635). Original by Johann Strauss II Reduction to String Orchestra by Aaron Meier Part: Full Score ONLY True to the original work by Strauss, this reduction for string orchestra features the ornaments and mystical writing that defines Strauss' polkas. There are optional percussion parts to be added at the discretion of the ensemble, however even without percussion the ensemble will sound full (the percussion acts as an ornament). Difficulty: Intermediate-advanced - advanced (best-suited for advanced student ensembles) ---Performance Notes: • Approximate length: 3:30 minutes • 1st Violins: In m. 1, trill a half step from a Dâ™ to a Dâ™®  • 2nd Violins:  - At m. 42, divide players by 3, with 2 players playing line A and the remaining player playing line B  - At m. 72-75, emphasize the Eâ™ in the div. • Snare Drum: The buzz roll needs to be quieter than how it is played in the midi recording (*see YouTube link ↓) History: The Olga-Polka itself owed its creation to a Russian royal wedding which took place in St. Petersburg on 28 August 1857. On that day, amid accompanying splendour, the music-loving Grand Duke Michail Nikolaievich (1832-1909), youngest brother of Tsar Alexander II, married Princess Caecilie of Baden (1839-91), daughter of Archduke Leopold of Baden. Johann Strauss, who at that time was giving a summer season of concerts in nearby Pavlovsk, used the opportunity occasioned by the event to enhance his already enviable popularity with the Russian royal family and composed the Caecilien-Polka in honour of the lovely young bride. Indeed, it is clear from a letter which Johann wrote in late July 1857 to Carl Haslinger, his publisher in Vienna, that the new polka had been prepared well in advance of the wedding (the fair copy of the full orchestral score made for the publisher's engraver is dated 9 August) and was enjoying success even before the royal couple's official engagement on 16August 1857. Sometime after performing the Caecilien-Polka in Pavlovsk, Johann despatched the work to the Austrian capital where his brother Josef conducted its Viennese première, together with that of Johann's waltz Telegraphische Depeschen (op. 195, Volume 28), at his own benefit concert in the Volksgartenon Sunday 18 October 1857. The Wiener Allgemeine Theaterzeitung (16.10.1857) remarked that both works have caused a sensation in St. Petersburg and are truly genial Viennese sounds full of verve and melody. Since tradition demanded that the German Princess Caecilie adopt a Russian name - Olga Feodorovna - before her marriage, so Johann's Caecilien-Polka also underwent a change of identity. On 8 December 1857 Carl Haslinger announced the publication of Strauss's Olga-Polka, on the title page of which is the inscription: Dedicated to her Imperial Highness Grand Duchess Olga, née Princess of Baden. It was under this title, too, that Johann himself first conducted the work in Vienna at a concert in the Volksgarten on 1 November 1857, shortly after his return from Russia. Reporting on this event, the Wiener Allgemeine Theaterzeitung (3.11.1857) observed: The 'Olga-Polka' is a most delightful, fragrant musical bouquet, full of fine, gracious rhythms.
