During Malaysia's third Covid-19 Lockdown, in January 2021, I composed a short piece for solo trombone each day for 14 days, performing them each evening in an online stream from my apartment balcony. This work fleshes out the themes from Lockdown Miniatures #1 and #4. The first two themes, from Lockdown Miniatures #1 (subtitled Here We Go Again), reflect the angst and uncertainty of beginning yet another lockdown — with all businesses once again closed, police roadblocks preventing movement beyond the neighborhood, and all human contact reduced to a small screen. The third theme, from Lockdown Miniatures #4 (subtitled Loss), is meant to express the raw emotion associated with losing loved ones over the previous ten months. This piece was recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Miran Vaupotic, on 26 February 2022 as part of a project by Parma Recordings. The album, titled Sparks: Eye of London, was released in October 2022 on Navona Records.

I have to believe that she wrote this poem around 1948 because of how it is worded. I of course knew the source of inspiration for this poem when I reread it not long ago—something I had not done since the 1990s—but its having been inspired by Hatikvah was really driven home to me by a Facebook comment. The ground breaking Netflix epic TV biopic series was indeed a huge sea change in home streaming content output, bringing together some of Britain's biggest names in theatre, film and TV to portray the history of Queen Elizabeth II's 70 years as the UK monarch.  Controversial at times, it had many critics but it was hugely popular with no less than 4 actresses taking on her portrayal.The respect, sensitivity and gravitas we would expect for a histirical drama production like this was self evident from the opening credits and the accompanying music.  The theme that Balfe, Gregson Williams and Zimmer created perfectly framed and set up each episode beautifully.  A little known fact is that it is based on a song written 400 years before it by Henry Purcell in his 'semi-opera' KING ARTHUR.  The harmonies Purcell wrote in his 'Cold song' were very progressive for the time it was written but provides a wonderful bed for the modern writing team to use as their inspiration.This orchestration follows the original TV soundtrack as closely as possible for standard concert orchestra instrumentation:2 FlutesPiccolo2 Oboes2 Clarinets1 Bass Clarinet2 Bassoons4 Horns3 Trumpets3 TrombonesTubaTimpani2 Percussion[Taiko Drum/Large Bass Drum]StringsCheckout some of the growing list of other titles now available on this website scored by Studio Orchestrations.

When composer Jerry Goldsmith was asked to write the score for MacArthur, people were surprised that he accepted the project because they wondered what he would have left to say, musically, after Patton. Jerry‘s feeling was that MacArthur was a totally different person, and it would be a real challenge to write about another military figure but do it in a different manner. He said “it‘s much more flamboyant in a different sort of way, and it was an interesting task“. Patton enjoyed resounding critical praise and has since been elevated to the designation of a classic. The film won Academy Awards for nearly all of its major players, with composer Jerry Goldsmith being an unfortunate exception. Goldsmith had already written many scores for World War II topics in his short mainstream career, but none would prove as memorable in any part as the march from Patton, a concert hall staple for the composer throughout his career. Despite the dominance of this theme and the fact that only roughly thirty minutes of music was employed in such a long picture, the effect of his score on the film is far more complicated than many people may realize. While the famous march, with all its bravado from brass, flutes, and snare, easily represents the identity of the character and war, Goldsmith’s work for the film actually spends more time dwelling on the deeper meanings of life that the general himself explored.Created from the original manuscript, this release offers a rare opportunity to study film music in its authentic, original orchestration and arrangement. Upstream Music #6353323. Published by Upstream Music (A0.933525). There are four known works of Beethoven for the violin and orchestra genre. They were written during the 1790-1806 period. These are the Violin Romance in G major Opus 40, the Violin Romance in F major Opus 50, the Violin Concerto in D major Opus 61 (1806) and the earlier Violin Concerto in C major WoO 5 (Hess 10). The latter was left to us as a fragment which Beethoven most probably composed in Bonn, between 1790 and 1792. The fragment contains 259 bars, fully written out and than stops abruptly….as if the score was torn in two. The composition is broken off exactly 15 bars into the development. The motif in the last known bars 258 and 259 initiated the task of joining the development as reliably as possible to the rest of the work.In the additional 258 bars, Cees took Beethovenꞌs material into consideration; also in the development, reprise and coda. The most remarkable is the coda. Cees uses a third related key here, which may seem strange at first but was used more often by Beethoven himself, for example in his Violin Concerto in D major Opus 61. It was necessary to compose this work backwards in a manner of speaking. In other words: Cees had to give all the global lines that Beethoven had so masterfully written as correct a place as possible in the score. With respect to earlier completions by colleagues, Cees did not set out by literally copying and transposing the exposition in the reprise. His aim was to write a completion as creatively as possible and still use Beethovenꞌs material and intricate weave ofvoices to the full. Hopefully this completed version will be a respected contribution to the rich violin literature
