Starting off slow and daunting at first, with shifts and odd dynamics and rhythms as you just allow yourself to fall into this new feeling. Then, the piece takes off. With confusing chords, a ground bass but always a visible motet. The ground bass always sounds like it may rush, like any second the pianist could speed up and leave the other pianist behind but it never does. The voices often trade parts and dance back and forth. With the treble line taking off suddenly, ending the ground bass line. The last section has question chords, and unresolved lines as a relationship starts to lose the new lover buzz and falls into a steady rhythm. Some may feel that the relationship is ending, that the two pianos don’t sound the same as they used to together. But really the two pianos have found their music. They don’t need to experiment with different rhythms, keys, or time signatures. They know what sounds good together, they can continue to make music forever.

The God Bless America theme follows with a much calmer, lighter character, but the dark theme returns and intensifies. A second appearance of God Bless America comes in a four-part, hymn-like setting, and then is followed by a final statement of God Bless America, this time in a heightened, excited drive toward the end. The difficulty level is moderately advanced, and is best suited for a solid, well-trained pair of pianists. The score includes both parts together in a traditional orchestral-score format, and then each part included separately. The separated parts are designed so that they can be used at separate pianos, or or so that they can be placed in the same score holder in a typical piano-duet secondo/primo format.

Simple Salsa was composed for my grandchildren Franklin and Faye and is meant to be fun for new pianists They began piano lessons nine months ago and have made great technical progress and love to perform. The lower part, Piano II, is easier and repeats a basic bass line and simple three note chords. Piano 1 is slightly more difficult but more melodic. The slower section on page two is more melodic and relaxed. The performer can double some of the melody pitches one octave above for more drama and volume. The optional egg shaker part (or any similar shakers) is just a basic Latin rhythm part and is not notated with normal rhythm notation. but just a text suggestion. The music can be played Piano Four Hands or with two pianos. Feel free to add or subtract to the notation and rhythms depending on the level of the young pianists. I would consider them both early intermediate, easily playing at Elementary IV NFMC class. This piece was quite the challenge at first. There are some tricky sections with unison runs. Playing cleanly is important here. Pedal should not be used very much except were notated. A definite crowd pleaser. Mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam was composed in Bremen (Germany) on 30th January 2017, shortly after knowing about the death of Uwe Kolkmeyer, musician and caricaturist to whom it is dedicated in memoriam.   The title refers to a thought by Carl Sagan: planet earth is a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. An old idea that, of course, was not expressed by him for the first and only time. In Sufism exists an allegory (attributed to Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi) according to which the essences of the possible beings do exist in the darkness before being manifested by the divine light, as the motes of dust suspended in the air in a darken room don't become visible until they are lit by a light ray.   A certain optimistic atmosphere in this work may surprise, the opposite of what is usually associated with death. In my works the tonality of A major often expresses consolation.   Selma Hande Gade (a Turkish pianist that lives in Denmark), with whom we had discussed possible titles for this work, recorded a home video in March 2017: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtzhHqB_Nb4   After listening to this recording, Luis Alberto Vittor wrote a report on this work for the blog Analecta Literaria (https://actaliteraria.blogspot.com), it will be published soon.   The composer made a commercial recording for the label Janus Music & Sound (JMS-999), which is available on iTunes, Spotify (and similar platforms). Each piece can be played by one, two, or three players. With three players each would play one line. With two players one will play a single line, the 2nd will play the other two lines. Most could be played by one advanced student, with some thoughtful practice and adjustments.

March Of The Dragons is in the key of d minor.  The hand position for both hands of both players is in d position.The song begins with a gradual introduction of the players beginning with the left hand of the secundo part followed by an entrance of the right hand.  The left hand of the primo player is then introduced followed by the right hand.  This pattern is repeated later in the piece but with the addition of a crescendo throughout the entrances of each hand.  The primo part has the melody in the beginning with an ostinato in the secundo.  This ostinato is later split between the primo and secundo as they share the melody alternating in a question and answer fashion.Dragons marching will capture the imagination of the students and the layout of the song is a great opportunity to teach balance and reinforce the staccato against legato technique.   Listen to the entire arrangement on YouTube.  ASCAP.
