Published by Philip Le Bas (A0.1127872). Incidental music composed for piano duet (4-hands) in four parts by Philip Le Bas to accompany the Japanese folk tale (ghost story) Yuki-Onna (Snow Woman). This piano duet developed out of a cross-cultural project initiated at Morley College, London, in early 2019, aiming to create a melodrama for piano solo and spoken voice to be performed in northern Japan later in the year by young students of the piano. It is based on the ghost-story above, which is widely known in Japan. The tale was transcribed and published by Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo) in 1904 as part of his book “Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things�, a collection that has been highly influential in expressing popular Japanese culture over the past century. Synopsis of the tale of Yuki-Onna: Two wood-cutters, Mosaku and his apprentice Minokichi, encounter a terrible snow-storm and take shelter in an empty hut by a river. The storm gets worse and worse, but they both finally fall asleep. When Minokichi wakes, he sees a woman all in white bending over Mosaku breathing bright white smoke onto his face. She then approaches Minokichi. She is very beautiful, but her eyes make him afraid. After a while she says, “I intended to do the same to you as I did to the old man, but I feel pity for you because you are a pretty young man. If you ever tell anybody what you have seen, however, I will kill you too.� And she vanishes into the snow storm. It is then that Minokichi discovers Mosaku dead on the floor of the hut. Years later Minokichi meets a beautiful girl, who calls herself O-Yuki. He falls in love with her and they live together in his house, along with his mother, who fortunately takes a liking to her new “honourable daughter-in-law.� Over the years O-Yuki gives birth to ten children and the villagers all agree that she is a wonderful person. But she is somehow different from them, as she continues to look young and fresh, despite the passing years. Minokichi often thinks of telling O-Yuki about the events of years ago, and eventually, as he is gazing at her beauty one night, he can resist it no more. He begins to tell her about the snow storm and the terrifying snow-woman. To his horror O-Yuki becomes more and more angry, and she finally says: “It was me, it was me,… and I said I would kill you if you ever told anyone! But for these children asleep here, I would do so this very moment! You had better take very good care of them; for if ever they have reason to complain of you, I will treat you as you deserve!� As she screams at him her voice becomes thin, like the crying of the wind, and she melts into a bright white mist spiraling into the roof-beams. At that moment it starts to snow, but O-Yuki is never seen again.

The masculine version is entrador.   - Second, entradora can be understood in this context as a substantivized adjective, i.e. a word that is actually an adjective, but is used as if it were a noun, like if I say Now I will play 'Entradora'. (for a more scientific explanation check yor favorite English grammar book).   - Third, entradora is a wink to Argentine composer Julián Plaza, who used adjectives as one-word title of several of his milongas and tangos, for instance Nocturna, Danzarín, Melancólico, Melancólica, Sensiblero, Nostálgico, Disonante, Dominguera, Expresivo, Futura, Instrumental, Juguetón, Paseandera, Payadora, Solemne, Temperamental - and possibly others that I am not aware of.   - And fourth, the meaning of the word entradora in the coloquial Spanish of Argentina is this one: if applied to a person, is someone that easily makes friends, that wins the trust of the people very easily, who is very charming. I applied to an object (or to a melody) it means that it is easy to grasp, that you remember it immediately (as an earworm), that is accessible and uncomplicated.   - Oh, there is a fifth point: are you native (or good) English speaker? After all this explanation do you come to an understandable translation of this word, Entradora? It is based on few fragments, motives that are lit in different light each time. The piece starts slow, but increases its intensity and speed as it progresses, utilizing the same motives. While composing the piece, I heard about a young man that threw himself to the river. I tried to imagine that went in his mind and what brought to this dead-end. And again the idea of a built intensity, obsessive and uncompromising came to my mind. At the very end of the piece, there is a sudden drop of intensity followed by a music box passage, as if describing what is going on in the person's mind right after the jump, right after reaching the edge of his life's spiral. Mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam was composed in Bremen (Germany) on 30th January 2017, shortly after knowing about the death of Uwe Kolkmeyer, musician and caricaturist to whom it is dedicated in memoriam.   The title refers to a thought by Carl Sagan: planet earth is a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. An old idea that, of course, was not expressed by him for the first and only time. In Sufism exists an allegory (attributed to Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi) according to which the essences of the possible beings do exist in the darkness before being manifested by the divine light, as the motes of dust suspended in the air in a darken room don't become visible until they are lit by a light ray.   A certain optimistic atmosphere in this work may surprise, the opposite of what is usually associated with death. In my works the tonality of A major often expresses consolation.   Selma Hande Gade (a Turkish pianist that lives in Denmark), with whom we had discussed possible titles for this work, recorded a home video in March 2017: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtzhHqB_Nb4   After listening to this recording, Luis Alberto Vittor wrote a report on this work for the blog Analecta Literaria (https://actaliteraria.blogspot.com), it will be published soon.   The composer made a commercial recording for the label Janus Music & Sound (JMS-999), which is available on iTunes, Spotify (and similar platforms).
