Going back to a melody of the Cuban music style Guajira and a text by the local national hero José Martí, it was used by José Fernández Díaz in the 1930s as a refrain for improvisations on topical daily news. In 1963 Peter Seeger took up Martí's original version at a concert at the New York Carnegie Hall – which then became a 'hymn' of the American Trade Union Movement.
