I got the Burnt Toast Blues - oh yeah!...Burnt Toast Blues is a catchy swing number for beginner (primo) players at about the Grade 1 (ABRSM) standard.The primo player starts off the whole piece with a 3 quaver 'pickup' into the melody, which is written in treble and bass clefs - but played two octaves higher.The written quaver quarter-notes are swung in the jazz style and there are some syncopated rhythms to keep you on your toes. Try saying badoo-bedoooooo-bee-doo and you'll get the idea!Burnt Toast Blues comes with a playalong swing backing track to accompany the primo player. This track has bass, drums and guitar 'rhythm' section plus the secondo part and is also available on Sheet Music Plus.Watch out for the dynamics (mp on the repeat) and also the staccato and accented notes, which will help the swing rhythm to 'swing'. It shares melodic themes between the Primo and Secondo partners.  Though it uses the dotted eighth note-sixteenth note figure in the notation, the coordination between the hands is always on the beat making it easier to learn.  It includes the verse, chorus and middle rap-like sections. The middle section melody rhythm is not performed with the strict dotted -eight note rhythm as notated but more like a swinging eight notes. Joan Bujacich also offers an Elementary and Junior level solo version of this popular song. This piece works well on the piano and makes a good rewarding sound without too much work for the student. Starting off slow and daunting at first, with shifts and odd dynamics and rhythms as you just allow yourself to fall into this new feeling. Then, the piece takes off. With confusing chords, a ground bass but always a visible motet. The ground bass always sounds like it may rush, like any second the pianist could speed up and leave the other pianist behind but it never does. The voices often trade parts and dance back and forth. With the treble line taking off suddenly, ending the ground bass line. The last section has question chords, and unresolved lines as a relationship starts to lose the new lover buzz and falls into a steady rhythm. Some may feel that the relationship is ending, that the two pianos don’t sound the same as they used to together. But really the two pianos have found their music. They don’t need to experiment with different rhythms, keys, or time signatures. They know what sounds good together, they can continue to make music forever.

Simple Salsa was composed for my grandchildren Franklin and Faye and is meant to be fun for new pianists They began piano lessons nine months ago and have made great technical progress and love to perform. The lower part, Piano II, is easier and repeats a basic bass line and simple three note chords. Piano 1 is slightly more difficult but more melodic. The slower section on page two is more melodic and relaxed. The performer can double some of the melody pitches one octave above for more drama and volume. The optional egg shaker part (or any similar shakers) is just a basic Latin rhythm part and is not notated with normal rhythm notation. but just a text suggestion. The music can be played Piano Four Hands or with two pianos. Feel free to add or subtract to the notation and rhythms depending on the level of the young pianists. If other y kids own Latin percussion instruments...they are welcome to join in! Hope you enjoy performing this lively music.

The student part has simplified the syncopated Latin rhythms and does not use anything faster than an eighth note in the notation.  The opening dialogue between Pepa and Felix is shared between the Student and  Teacher, with the Teacher playing the tricky answer lines of Pepa.  The Teacher part uses the rhythms of the original version and captures the Latin feel.  The lyrics are included! There also is a little section where the student claps on 2 and 4  to get the audience into the spirit!
