The six sonatas by Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739) are among the best-known baroque compositions for violoncello and basso continuo, second only to those by Antonio Vivaldi. Marcello was a famous composer during his lifetime, and consequently his collection could be found in printed editions in the major European music metropolises of London, Paris and Amsterdam. Even if there is some uncomfortable fingering in these sonatas - which might be due to Marcello's working with a five-string cello with an added E' string - they are of only moderate difficulty and belong to the standard works of the violoncello teaching literature.

Die sechs Sonaten von Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739) gehören neben denjenigen von Antonio Vivaldi zu den bekanntesten Barockkompositionen für Violoncello und Basso continuo. Schon zu Lebzeiten des zu seiner Zeit durchaus berühmten Komponisten wurde die Sammlung in den wichtigen europäischen Musikmetropolen London, Paris und Amsterdam in Drucken angeboten. Auch wenn es einige unbequeme Griffverbindungen in diesen Sonaten gibt, die daher rühren dürften, dass Marcello mit einem fünfsaitigen, um eine e’-Saite ergänzten Cello rechnete, so sind sie doch von moderater Schwierigkeit und gehören zu den Standardwerken des Violoncellounterrichts.

A large number of works by the Italian musician Giovanni Battista Cirri (1724-1808) from Forlì were printed all his life. The busy cello virtuoso naturally wrote works for 'his' instrument mainly, including concertos and sonatas, but also wrote a number of chamber music pieces for other instruments as well as occasional compositions for orchestra or for religious occasions. The present Sonata in C major is ideal for beginners lessons. It is a catchy, melodious and rewarding piece for young cellists which is fun to play (and to listen to). The accompanying bass part has deliberately been turned into a simple piano part so that it can also be played by pupils.
