The busy cello virtuoso composed of course particularly for 'his' instrument, both concertos and sonatas, but also a number of chamber music pieces in other instrumentations, apart from occasional works for orchestra or for sacred occasions. The Sonata in F major published here is perfectly suitable for beginner's lessons, being a catchy, nice-sounding and rewarding piece for young cellists which is fun to play (and to listen to). The accompanying bass part was deliberately arranged as an easy piano part so that it can also be played by pupils.

Auch wenn es einige unbequeme Griffverbindungen in diesen Sonaten gibt, die daher rühren dürften, dass Marcello mit einem fünfsaitigen, um eine e’-Saite ergänzten Cello rechnete, so sind sie doch von moderater Schwierigkeit und gehören zu den Standardwerken des Violoncellounterrichts.

The six sonatas by Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739) are among the best-known baroque compositions for violoncello and basso continuo, second only to those by Antonio Vivaldi. Marcello was a famous composer during his lifetime, and consequently his collection could be found in printed editions in the major European music metropolises of London, Paris and Amsterdam. Even if there is some uncomfortable fingering in these sonatas - which might be due to Marcello's working with a five-string cello with an added E' string - they are of only moderate difficulty and belong to the standard works of the violoncello teaching literature.
