The Db Piccolo is transposed and expanded to the modern piccolo and two flutes. five clarinet parts (including the Eb) are reduced to the standard three. Eb altos are transposed for F Horn and given a bit of melody in the third strain. The march has been designed to be simple enough for beginner brass players to also manage it, while simultaneously being entertaining. Making use of the common march rhythm, it can be instrumental for music teachers to use to train beginner brass players in the march style. It is in a simple key of G-Major (not many sharps or flats). The notes are not too high or too low for the different instruments so that beginner brass players can manage. The song is also slow enough to allow junior brassers to cope. If a tuba is also unavailable, it can be substituted by a trombone or euphonium. And best of all, who does not wish to be entertained with a joyous song on their birthday. Seeing also that there are so many birthdays in a year, this is an ideal piece to perform on many such occasions. The harmonies are spread across the low brass and trumpets and lower woodwinds. The flugal, mellophone and baritone horn continue with the melody throughout with high woodwinds doubling the melody. The percussion section includes quad toms, timpani, snare, and bass drum. The flute part could be doubled by xylophone and/or other pitch percussion in octaves. The lower register long tones lend itself to a warm up to begin the show and the rhythmic cadence for this piece makes it a good down field number to place the marching band in a presentation formation for additional selections.
