What if the song Uptown Funk had a sequel? And what if that sequel took the form of a corps-style drumline cadence? Smalltown Funk was written for the Winfield High School Drumline in 2016 in that headspace. From funky grooves that will get everyone in the stadium dancing to jarring metric changes that will keep the rest of the band on their toes, this jam is not for the student who is faint of heart, or the instructor who is short of patience (or ambition!). It features double strokes, triple strokes, 16th-note syncopations and metric modulations galore, and as is my style, contains an abundance of textures and sounds. It is as groovy as it is tricky.

This cadence, originally written in 2015 for the Winfield High School drumline, is now enhanced for the modern era. With solos for each section and textural shifts in the narrative, this jam will keep your audiences grooving while also asking, What just happened?!
