Hymntunes I contains deconstructed versions of three familiar Christmas hymns. The movements were deconstructed in the same way that much post-modern architecture or visual art is deconstructed. A deconstructivist building will have most of the elements of a traditional building. Some elements will be exaggerated (a window might be many times too large or too small) and some elements will be displaced (a doorway might be several feet from the wall, the roof might appear to float above the building). These preludes use similar techniques. Most of the elements of the original hymntunes are present but some are exaggerated, repeated many times, or used differently from the original. These chorale preludes use several unfamiliar techniques: slides between notes, arm vibrato, a doppler portamento, harmonics, and tremolos.

Anam is for amplified flute and loop pedal and is a work built around the concept of being able to hear the souls of men. There are many religions and spiritual beliefs that feature a deity or omnipotent power, which can hear and communicate with the souls of mankind. Many depictions of this ability seem to make out the souls of man making a cacophonous sound, but I choose to believe that if one could hear the souls of every person to ever walk the earth, it would be a peaceful and balanced sound. Anam is meant to capture this belief by building layers of musical ideas that simultaneously clash and meld with each other. The work was written to be very open to interpretation with no tempo marking and several long, solo improvisation sections.

Natalia Jarz?bek, Flute.                   The piece was composed as an étude to practice the technique of circular breathing. It has a single movement divided into five long phrases. The title is a metaphor for the form of the piece and also for the way the sounds are normally produced on the flute, where landscapes are represented by the musical phrases that contain sounds that “float” in the air in a flow that is produced and controlled by the performer. However “floating” also has connotations with something that circulates, e.g. an idea, providing an analogy to circular breathing. There are no bar lines in the piece. The rhythmic combinations have a freer, asymmetrical flow as they follow the internal structure of each phrase. The piece explores various nuances of dynamics (from ppp to f) in a slow rubato tempo, with a predominance of softer sounds. The piece aims at increasing the performer’s awareness of applying circular breathing over large intervals, and at developing the phrase building logic and its application.

This rondo features two episodes, modulating to A major and C# minor, with variations on the refrain. ---------------------------Adam Lenhart (b. 2002) is a University of Michigan student of music theory, composition, voice and organ from Ottawa Lake, Michigan. As a theorist, his areas of study vary widely, including 18th century counterpoint, the early American Sacred Harp tradition and impressionism. As a composer, his music draws inspiration from nature, mathematics and poetry. In 2020 he was awarded the Michigan Music Education Association’s Young Composers of Michigan award, as well as first prize in the University of Toledo Young Composers competition. Lenhart has also participated in numerous ensembles across Michigan, including the MYAF All-State Choir, Tecumseh Pops Orchestra, University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club and the SMTD University Choir. He thoroughly enjoys collaboration with other composers, performers, poets and visual artists. Some of his recent projects include collaborations with individuals from the University of Michigan Chamber Music, History, and Poetry departments.
