Consider The Lillies is inspired by Jesus’ sermon on the mount, specifically, His explanation of the futility of worrying. He uses two illustrations from nature, birds and flowers, as examples of living in quiet contentment. In each case, Jesus admonishes us to take a moment to either look at or consider. Both actions require us to engage in contemplation. 

The piece is cast loosely in the Loure dance form, with long pauses interrupting each phrase portion. The piece is an illustration of taking time to consider something in a deep and meaningful way. A technically simple tune embodies the quiet life of contented trust in God and contemplation. 

Consider The Lillies mimics the act of hearing an idea, then pausing to consider it. Both performer and audience are given time to contemplate the musical phrase portions during the moment of silence that follows each musical idea.


Performance Notes

When performing Consider The Lillies, approach each phrase portion as a melody in and of itself. The main tempo marking at the beginning, Adagio Rubato, allows the performer to  naturally act out the process of hearing an idea, then pausing for contemplation. Executing a strict tempo is not necessary. However, each phrase should be performed without drastic tempo changes.

All My Loving is a Beatles song, composed by Paul McCartney (although it is credited to Lennon/McCartney) for the 1963 album With the Beatles.

It was one of the few examples of compositions where McCartney wrote the lyrics before the music; the text was apparently conceived as a poem, composed while he was shaving.

McCartney originally envisioned it as a country & western song, and it was written on piano during a rehearsal for the Beatles' tour with Roy Orbison; George Harrison added his Nashville-style guitar solo to the recording. Using the letter format in the song's lyrics, also used in P.S. I Love You.

What Child Is This descant is for the traditional GREENSLEEVES tune. Use hymnal or other source for accompaniment; descants for the hymns fit Lutheran Service Book (LSB) and Lutheran Book of Worship (LBW) settings, as well as the Lutheran Worship (LW) setting of What Child Is This. Descants may also fit other hymnal settings. Example: For Christmas Eve or Service of Lessons and Carols, sing the first stanza of each hymn after the reading Luke 2:6-7, with flute solo interlude, such as: - Luke 2:6-7 reading - Hymn: Away in a Manger, stanza 1 (or stanzas 1 and 3, using descant stanza 3) - Flute solo interlude - Hymn: What Child Is This, stanza 1 Or use descants separately and omit interlude.
