How Many Ways Can I Play It? #7 Baa Baa Black Sheep is intended to help the reluctant scale learner.  We have the melody, then octaves and then working the thirds in the scale of B-flat.  The verse with the thirds could also be used as a duet for the melody.  Then we get the scales.  One set of notes, 3 different articulations to play them.  Cap it off with a tricky rhythm by simply removing some of the scale notes and you have a non-stressful way to be comfortable in the key of B-flat.

I was thinking about all the ways in which we could not breathe in 2020 - George Floyd's last words, the COVID-19 pandemic putting us all on masks and respirators, the wildfires filling our homes with smoke, the racism that has silenced so many for so long. I thought it would be interesting to write a piece with all that in mind for flute, an instrument which is, of course, all about breathing.  The piece is one movement with four sections: George Floyd, Protests, Respirators, and Wildfires. It runs approximately 9 to 10 minutes, at the performer’s discretion. It requires some improvisation, a few special effects (multiphonics, use of voice, jet whistle), some serious breath control, and a lot of energy. The performer is asked to breathe in specific ways, to make the audience aware of the breathing, and to become uncomfortably short of breath.  There is also optional use of electronic Loop for layering voices in the final section.This piece was premiered by Anthony Trionfo at the National Flute Association convention, Aug. 4, 2023.  Check out the Youtube link for an exciting performance.This is an intensely emotional piece and unlike my other compositions. The word Ide means go in archaic Portuguese, and in this tense suggests an imperatively dictated order. This caught my attention while reading the New Testament and noticed that Jesus used this imperative a few times with his disciples. This order was sometimes for his disciples to be like sheep among wolves, no matter the social or physical consequences of what they were about to do, other times the commendment was simply to spread love and grace around the world. For the New Testament, man's relationship with his Creator thus suggests a decision to be made by man himself to go beyond what can be seen as reality, as if human beings had to have the courage to go without fear beyond its limits, and only then could it experience a transcendent spiritual reality. A faith that involves the attitude of man, who by pure grace manages, if he so chooses, to go beyond. This piece was composed in 2013 and the recorded in 2015. Anam is for amplified flute and loop pedal and is a work built around the concept of being able to hear the souls of men. There are many religions and spiritual beliefs that feature a deity or omnipotent power, which can hear and communicate with the souls of mankind. Many depictions of this ability seem to make out the souls of man making a cacophonous sound, but I choose to believe that if one could hear the souls of every person to ever walk the earth, it would be a peaceful and balanced sound. Anam is meant to capture this belief by building layers of musical ideas that simultaneously clash and meld with each other. The work was written to be very open to interpretation with no tempo marking and several long, solo improvisation sections.
