This little work was composed at the suggestion of the Belgian organist Jef Anseeuw who performed the world premiere at the Heilig-Hart Kerk in Izegem on 25 September 1982 together with Lieven Vanderwalle on the violoncello. The piece begins with a paraphrase of the initial motif 'Salve Regina' which is intonated by the cello in the low register. The cello then plays the entire melody of the song. The decent organ accompaniment is limited to some short interludes in which motifs of the Gregorian melody, as in a classical chorale prelude, are played in advance in an imitative manner. The lyrical, meditative composition is ideal for services or concerts and can be combined as an introductory piece with the large-scale organ composition 'Salve Regina' from Schroeder's 'Marianische Antiphone' (ED 4538).

Many years ago I saw a sculpture of Anish Kapoor: in this sculpture there were two huge halved orbs hanging from two sides of the room. The halved orbs were dark purple blue, which was so dark that the end of the orbs (their inside) was not visible. They seemed, instead, like endless openings. The piece Gradual Edge is an attempt to trace, as if through touch, and follow the imaginary passage on this half orb, attempting to figure out, through touch, the transition from substance to the endless cavities inside in increasing darkness. The piece is dedicated to Christina Meißner and Poul Skjølstrup Larsen. Chaya CzernowinChaya Czernowins Gradual edge für Violoncello und Orgel ist durch eine Skulptur von Anish Kapoor inspiriert, die aus zwei riesigen Halbkugeln besteht. Es ist ein Versuch, dem Übergang von äußerer Substanz zu den endlosen Hohlräumen im Inneren der zunehmenden Dunkelheit nachzuforschen.
