The title 'Echoes' can mean several things in this piece: it could refer to the musical ideas themselves, which often echo themselves; it could also mean the interaction between cornet and piano, which is often canonic; the music also evokes past eras, echoes of the past, with references to plainsong, 20th Century American music, and impressionism.
