Amazing Grace is perhaps the best-known and best-loved hymn in the world. The writer, John Newton, led a dissolute life as a sailor in the slave trade for many years before marriage, along with a close encounter with death at sea, dramatically changed his perspective. He lived out his later years as a devout and charismatic clergyman in the English countryside, renowned for his direct and personal style. The words he wrote in Amazing Grace are an intimate retelling of his spiritual journey.

The hymn was written in 1773, and was sung to many different melodies initially, but since the mid nineteenth century it has become most closely associated with the famous folk tune melody presented here, New Britain.

This version is arranged as a solo for Trumpet with Piano accompaniment. The melody is played four times, each verse in a different style. Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances, on both sacred and secular occasions. The overall performance time is around three and a half minutes.

This fun piece is loosely based on a popular Russian folk polka. In 1853 Charles Czerny took this polka tune and created a piano etude as part of his set Amusement des Juenes Amateurs. I have taken some of his themes and adapted and arranged them for instrumental solo. I have assembled them into a Rondo form: Intro-A-B-A-C-A-D-A-Coda.  
It is an etude (study) to sharpen your playing of scales, arpeggios, melodic interval leaps, and various articulations. But it doesn't at all sound like an exercise because of the playful nature of the polka. This dramatic piece shows your technical accomplishments while delivering a crowd pleasing tune with great flourish.
I have marked it as Intermediate in difficulty as a general average. The notes and rhythms are Easy, the quick Tempo makes it Early Intermediate, and the range which is a half step beyond a full 2 octaves makes it Advanced Intermediate for some instruments.

Each arrangement is thematically linked, not only by its Patriotic nature, but its harmonic, structural, and stylistic content. It begins with up to 3 soloists playing Echo Taps, then moves in the iconic Battle Hymn of the Republic. It soon transitions to a jazzy America the Beautiful, followed by a toe-tapping You're a Grand Old Flag. A stirring setting of America proceeds into The Star-Spangled Banner and a final strong ending featuring the refrain of The Battle Hymn. America (My Country, 'Tis of Thee) uses lyrics written by Samuel Francis Smith to the tune of the United Kingdom's national anthem, God Save the Queen. It was once the de facto national anthem of the U.S.A. before The Star-Spangled Banner was adopted. This arrangement adds to the fanfare and gallantry of the tune with many flourishes and ornaments. The second verse features a Charles Ives-like variation with a rhythmically augmented melody soaring over a three-part canon below. It is bound to give the audience a patriotic swelling in their chests!

The tune of the Battle Hymn of the Republic took several forms and had many sets of lyrics before Julia Ward Howe wrote the ones with which we are familiar in 1861. The music was already popular among the troops of the Civil War and this new text turned it into one of the most familiar and popular hymns across the nation. This arrangement seeks to honor the march and fanfare feel of the original while using more modern harmonic and rhythmic ideas. Each verse has its own style adding variety, excitement, and anticipation for the glorious ending!
