He had been coached by Reynolds in a brass quintet for several years while a graduate student at the Eastman School of Music and has always had tremendous respect for Reynolds as a performer and composer. Ponzo requested that the piece exploit the range of timbres available from various instruments and so the work uses five different horns (trumpets in C, B-flat, and E-flat; flugelhom, and B-flat comet). Ponzo premiered Solus on a recital on 12 March 1995 and subsequently recorded it on The Trumpet Music of Verne Reynolds (Mark 4843-MCD). The composer commented that Solus does not have to be performed in its entirety. N.B. Reynolds stated in the holograph of Solus that all the movements are notated in concert pitch.

The songs in the collection are approximately one minute in length and are in keys and meters commonly found in most instrumental methods. The ranges of the songs seldom go above one octave. There are fourteen songs in the collection sequenced by level of difficulty. There is great variety within the collection as each of the songs as its own unique character. For each song, there is a solo score and a solo/piano-accompaniment score. As an aid, the collection includes a CD with two tracks: one with only the solo part, one with only the accompaniment part. Although the accompaniments sound musically sophisticated, they were designed to be playable by the younger pianist. Its structure falls roughly into a sonata form. The first theme is short and animate, while the second one, in contrast, sings a long lyrical tune. Since the keys are not established in conventional ways the tonal centers are ambiguous in most times. Although the dominancy of the trumpet cannot be avoided in this instrumental setting, the composer tried to make the piano sound equally interesting and attractive with the trumpet.
