Down by the Riverside (also known as Ain't Gonna Study War No More and Gonna lay down my burden) is a African American spiritual. Its roots date back to before the American Civil War, though it was first published in 1918 in Plantation Melodies: A Collection of Modern, Popular and Old-time Songs of the Southland, Chicago, the Rodeheaver Company. The song has alternatively been known as Ain' go'n' to study war no mo', Ain't Gwine to Study War No More, Down by de Ribberside, Going to Pull My War-Clothes and Study war no more.

In 1849 Robert Schumann completed a set of Romantic character pieces for piano which he named Forest Scenes. One of that set was called Roadside Inn, which I have arranged for Instrumental Solo with Piano Accompaniment. In keeping with the characteristics of the Romantic period my arrangement is full of contrasts and constant shifts between dynamics, articulations, and themes. I took themes and fragments of themes from the original and re-ordered them into a bit of a rondo form. There are interpretive marks in every measure making it a great piece for auditions to show your technique and interpretation. Not too difficult to play but sounds quite advanced when all details are observed. Another feature is the beautiful harmonic interplay between the solo and accompaniment. To be played warmly and with passion to welcome people to your Roadside Inn.

This Fanfare for Freedom was written as a Prelude to my arrangement of The Star-Spangled Banner, also a part of my United We Stand Collection. It can also be performed on its own if preferred. The opening Rubato melody is meant to evoke a regal pride with its soaring grandeur over the harmonies below. The contrasting fast section that follows provides a fantastic fanfare of frenzied enthusiasm with an accelerated melody inspired by that of The Star-Spangled Banner. This fanfare is bound to get patriotic pride flowing through the veins at any venue!
