Verdi was inspired to compose this work, prompted by the challenge put forth to harmonize the Enigmatic Scale by composer Adolfo Crescentini. The rather bizarre scale is passed around to all the parts throughout the entire work and has become part of the mystery of this beautiful sacred work. This 6-minute piece has been brilliantly arranged for 8-part Brass Ensemble with the following instrumentation: Cornet in B-flat, 3 Flugelhorns, 3 Trombones and Bass Trombone. Substitute parts for 2 Horns and Tuba are also included if desired. This work may be performed by moderately advanced performers.

Tollite Hostias (Bring Forth Your Offerings) is an anthem and comes from the final chorus of his Christmas Oratorio from 1858. Jean-Louis Couturier has arranged these two lovely works for Brass Quartet. They will work for Christmas or Easter and can be performed by intermediate + performers, as the technical demands are quite modest. Instrumentation is for 2 Trumpets in B-flat, Horn (substitute Trombone part) and Trombone or Euphonium.
