Published by Albismusic (A0.1107288). Julius Katterfeldt was born in Wandsbek in 1813. Wandsbek was not yet part of Hamburg at that time. His father Johann Hinrich Katterfeldt was the organist at the famous Schnitger organ of Hamburg's main church St. Jakobi. He also gave his son first music lessons. Later he was a pupil of the famous Christian Heinrich Rinck in Darmstadt. Julius Katterfeldt was first organist at the church of St. Johannes in Eppendorf. In 1840, Katterfeldt was appointed by the Danish king to the post of cathedral organist in Schleswig. After the Schleswig-Holstein uprising (1848 to 1851) he had to give up his organist post at the cathedral. Friedrich von Reventlou (1797-1874) brought Katterfeldt to the monastery church in Preetz, where Renventlou was provost, because of the political quarrels over the county of Holstein. In Preetz he even had to take on sexton duties in addition to organ duties. After the war (Battle of Dybbøl/DK), Schleswig once again belonged to the Republic of Prussia. For this reason, the German Emperor had a new tower built for Schleswig Cathedral in 1864. It can be assumed that the church symphony by Julius Katterfeldt was composed for this purpose beforehand and was therefore later published by the renowned Berlin music publisher BOTE & BOCK. His Church Symphony Opus 18, for brassband and organ, is dedicated to the Prussian Emperor Wilhelm I. Katterfeldt’s Church Symphony is the first original symphonic work for the instrumentation organ and brass band. His son-in-law was the Schwerin cathedral organist George Hepworth (1825-1918). Through his contacts in England, some of J. Based on Grieg's famous orchestral movement from 'Peer Gynt Suite no.1', this arrangement is a contemporary twist on an old classic and designed to appeal to young audiences and musicians. It was originally written for Sæbø Skulemusikklag, Norway, for World Brass Day 2017. The performance was recorded as representation of Norwegian culture and uploaded to Youtube in a shared playlist alongside others from around the globe*. The arrangement begins in a similar creepy manner to the original, tip-toeing in and gradually building up to a frightening frenzy. Something of a surprise is in store for the audience after a familiar opening however; a dubstep/drum n bass twist drops in before the melody rejoins in a new fashion, leading on to solo moments for drum kit and timpani. Elements of the original orchestration are again infused into the repeated refrain to intensify the music towards a dramatic final close.Note to conductors:Difficult solo tuba parts are a feature, but a simplified version is also supplied for less advanced players.The soprano cornet, 2nd horn and 2nd baritone parts are supplementary and can be omitted without problem. Beginner level (aspirant) parts are provided, written in B and E flat as 'Trolls' so that newer band members can join in. *this arrangement has been edited since that performance for publication.

The arrangement sets three verses of the melody 'bookended' by a mirrored introduction and coda. It was originally written for trumpet sextet and performed by the cornet section of the Band of the Welsh Guards, before being expanded to military (wind) and brass band formats.In the hymn, one sings of a hopeful final journey to a place without worry or sorrow. The arrangement reflects the mood of these three verses, with increaing tension and movement through ascending lines as the journey progresses towards a final resting place. The hymn is regularly used at funerals and memorial services. The text was originally old German and translated to Norwegian by Bernt Støyland in 1905. Translated to English, the text reads as:I know a castle in heaven above,shining as bright as the sun;you'll find no sin nor sorrow there,and never a tear is shed. I am a weary traveller;may my path lead mefrom here to my Father's land;God, bless me on my way. We thank you for eternityGod the Father, one in three.For you are gentle and mild to us in Jesus Christ! Amen. Note to conductors:The opening and closing sections require precision in the start and release of notes for the chord progression to function. Attention to detail should be paid to each individual crescendi, diminuendi and articulation. This is excellent training for even the best of bands!An optional vocal part is provided in both Norwegian and English, but the arrangement functions with or without it. Cues are written for important lines should players be missing, otherwise many of the parts are doubled across the band. Therefore this arrangement should be playable by bands from approximately 2nd/3rd division upwards even if some players are missing.

A Piacere was a phrase used in the 19th century to leave the interpretation of a musical passage up to the player. In this piece, this is done by leaving an improvising soloist to play as he or she wants accompanied by a large brass and percussion ensemble. The brass ensemble plays written rhythmic and melodic cells, the order of which is indicated in concert by the conductor. A Piacere was a Commande d'Etat, from the French government in 1996. Depending on the improvisations, the duration is between 20-30 minutes. Explanations are to be found at the end of the score.A Piacere was premiered by Michel Godard, tuba soloist with the ensemble A Piacere, Philippe Barthod, conductor at Contrexeville, France on October 29, 1996.

In writing the Ricercare In B Flat Major For Brass Orchestra, it came to my attention the works of Giovanni Gabrielli, Palestrina and other composers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The fugues of Johann Sebastien Bach and his contemporaries are the descendants of the ricercare in that the themes are treated contrapuntally. The main feature in the ricercare and the fugue is the melodic imitation of the principal theme. Unlike the fugues of Bach that includes the countersubject, the ricercare has no regular countermelody to provide musical interest to the theme. Another feature to discover in the Ricercare In B Flat Major is the concerto nature, where the trumpet ensemble plays against instruments of lower pitch registration and the French horn chorus plays against instruments of different tone colors. The concluding section of the piece includes all instruments playing together.In performing the work, the brass orchestra performs together on stage. There also may be a possibility of having the work performed in different parts of a hall to give listeners an idea of the concerto-like works of Gabrielli’s sacred symphonies. This idea may be decided at the discretion of the conductor and the ensemble.The work is suitable for concert use and may be used to teach students the compositional techniques composers of previous centuries used in composing their works.
