A Doge (Chief Magistrate or Duke) willing to spend, and spend big, on musical pomp and ceremony. A dearth of wealth and money to fund the grandest celebrations. He was the leading Italian composer and organist in Venice at its greatest heights at the chasm between the end of the Renaissance and the beginning of the Baroque period in music. Presented here is a Canzona published around 1615 for 6 brass. A variety of substitute parts are also included to handle the trombone parts with French horns and tubas. A great work that draws from Gabrieli’s many styles. The piece starts with a song like tune that is repeated throughout. Each variation is separated by a 3/4 dance-like chanson repeated throughout. The final cadence is classic Gabrieli with its grand finale. A Gabrieli instrumental ensemble work that provides listeners with a variety of common Gabrieli touches all in one piece without requiring a lot of musical forces.

Published by James Marshall Music (A0.913632). Septet for Brass is one of the earliest compositions of this composer. It echoes the sentiments of the  Cold War late 1960s in its bold, brass gestures of confidence and elan. Set in traditional three movement form, the opening Allegro heralds the return to decorum following the upheaval of the decade. The secondary theme is reminiscent of the English lyricism of Vaughn Williams. This sentiment returned to the pen of this composer in recent years in compositions commissioned by London clarinetist Alison Eales. This score originally from 1969 was edited during the Pandemic of 2020-2021. Andante is a lamenting chorale played by the Tuba  laced by haunting melismas suggesting the drawn out moods in the music of Shostakovich. The final Rondo is spirited with a theme in 9/8 (3/4 + 3/8) with subsequent sections of mix meter and pulsating textures. Instrumentation is 2 Trumpets in C, 2 Horns in F, 2 Trombones and Tuba.

Conflictus:  Latin for conflict or struggle.  To live is to embrace struggle.  Even in a musical work can be heard both protagonist and antagonist voices in conflict, motifs rivaling for preeminence as they interweave, confront and overarch. Such is the case with the fantasia, Conflictus.  It begins with a simple theme on a single note; it ends in similar manner: a placid unison as once-strident voices are drawn, still passively resisting, to a concordance.  But in between, this interlocked trio will challenge, fight, cajole, ally, mock, mourn and rail with defiance.  All within the brief musical foray of Conflictus.

The idea for this arrangement was given to me by an old friend who played in BR Edge Hill band with when we were kids, Christine Humphreys and to do it for bass trombone, the more I looked at it thinking of Eric Burdon’s voice from The Animals with his first verse nearly too low for him to scrape the lower notes and then the later verses near to top of his register suited. The Animals though in A minor, so for BT I dropped it to Ab minor a real shall we say juicy register for bass trombone plus the added attraction of setting it in the lower octave pedal area to show the instrument off. There aren’t may Bass Trom solos in the rep, so now we add one more!An interview with Eric Burdon revealed that he first heard the song at a club in Newcastle, England, where it was performed by Northumberland folk singer Johnny Handle.The Animals were on tour with Chuck Berry and chose him because they wanted to sing something different. The Animals version moves the narrative from the initial point of view of a woman drawn into a life of decline to that of a man whose father is a gambler and a drunk, rather than the adorable person of the previous versions.
