The melody of this traditional folksong A la orilla de un palmar, was originally found in the area of San Pedro Gorda, Zacatecas, México.  It is a story about a coastal orphan girl who lives alone in a palm grove by the sea.  Composers such as Manuel M. Ponce (1882-1948), the founder of Mexican musical nationalism, often incorporated the melodies of traditional folksongs into their music (12 Canciones mexicanas – 1913).  This arrangement is for a 4-part brass ensemble of 2 trumpets and 2 trombones.  Performance time: 4:15. Expand the awareness of Mexican Art Song repertoire through performance.

This is a great piece of patriotic music for all times of celebrating our freedom and our flag. The driving rhythm starts at the first measure and works its way throughout the piece to a reference of My country 'tis of thee… just before the rousing finish.

Every instrument of the brass quintet is featured with melodies, doubling, unisons and solos. For performance practice emphasis should be on ending notes as written for a crisp presentation.

Playing time is 3.5 minutes.

Most everyone likes cowboy songs, and Ghost Riders in the Sky is one of the most exciting to hear and perform.  This arrangement gives each musician in the brass quintet several solo opportunities and excellent rhythmic challenges.  The lyrics tell the frightful story of a cowboy receiving a sobering warning to change your ways, or else!  (see page two of the music.)

Stan Jones was an American songwriter and actor, primarily writing Western music. He is best remembered for writing the legendary (ghost) Riders in the Sky (A Cowboy Legend), which has been called the #1 Western song ever written.
