SKU: A0.768479

Composed by Edvard Grieg. Arranged by Roar Kvam. Romantic Period. Score and parts. 174 pages. KVAMusic Edition #33653. Published by KVAMusic Edition (A0.768479).

The Holberg Suite, Op. 40, more properly From Holberg's Time (Norwegian: Fra Holbergs tid, German: Aus Holbergs Zeit), subtitled Suite in olden style (Norwegian: Suite i gammel stil, German: Suite im alten Stil), is a suite of five movements based on eighteenth century dance forms, written by Edvard Grieg in 1884 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Danish-Norwegian humanist playwright Ludvig Holberg. It exemplifies nineteenth century music which makes use of musical styles and forms from the preceding century. The movements of the suite are: Praeludium (Allegro vivace) Sarabande (Andante) Gavotte (Allegretto) Air (Andante religioso) Rigaudon (Allegro con brio) The Holberg Suite was originally composed for the piano, but a year later was adapted for string orchestra. The suite consists of an introduction and a set of dances. It is a charming, early essay in neo-classicism, an attempt to echo as much as was known in Grieg's time of the music of Holberg's era. This edition is an arrangement for a traditional Brass Band, and the music works very well for the band.

Composed by Julius Katterfeldt (1813-1886). Classical,Sacred. Score and parts. 14 pages. Albismusic #709950. Published by Albismusic (A0.1107288).

Julius Katterfeldt was born in Wandsbek in 1813. Wandsbek was not yet part of Hamburg at that time. His father Johann Hinrich Katterfeldt was the organist at the famous Schnitger organ of Hamburg's main church St. Jakobi. He also gave his son first music lessons. Later he was a pupil of the famous Christian Heinrich Rinck in Darmstadt. Julius Katterfeldt was first organist at the church of St. Johannes in Eppendorf. In 1840, Katterfeldt was appointed by the Danish king to the post of cathedral organist in Schleswig. After the Schleswig-Holstein uprising (1848 to 1851) he had to give up his organist post at the cathedral. Friedrich von Reventlou (1797-1874) brought Katterfeldt to the monastery church in Preetz, where Renventlou was provost, because of the political quarrels over the county of Holstein. In Preetz he even had to take on sexton duties in addition to organ duties. After the war (Battle of Dybbøl/DK), Schleswig once again belonged to the Republic of Prussia. For this reason, the German Emperor had a new tower built for Schleswig Cathedral in 1864. It can be assumed that the church symphony by Julius Katterfeldt was composed for this purpose beforehand and was therefore later published by the renowned Berlin music publisher BOTE & BOCK. His Church Symphony Opus 18, for brassband and organ, is dedicated to the Prussian Emperor Wilhelm I. Katterfeldt’s Church Symphony is the first original symphonic work for the instrumentation organ and brass band. His son-in-law was the Schwerin cathedral organist George Hepworth (1825-1918). Through his contacts in England, some of J. Katterfeldt's organ works were published in the anthologies Organist's Quarterly Journal (editor, William Spark). this publication: ISMN 979-700-212-81-0 instrumental parts (PiccTrp, Fluegelhorn, Trumpet 1+2, Frenchhorn 1+2 (F alt. C), Euphonium, Tuba) conductor score: ISMN 979-700-212-81-4.

Composed by Charles Johnson (1908). Arranged by Dr. Jim Fox. 20th Century,Folk,Ragtime,Traditional. Score and parts. 73 pages. All Brass Radio Publishing #3469858. Published by All Brass Radio Publishing (A0.927014).

A fast two-step rag from 1908.  The melody travels from section to section.  As a two-step rag, it is written to go fast, about 132 bpm.  This would be a good concert in the park piece as it is flashy, and fun to play and listen to.  It has wonderful parts for every instrument in the brass band.

It is a finger twister, but once the band has it under its fingers, it shines as a rag written 110 years ago and captures the ragtime feel.  It is a bit on the difficult size and will take some rehearsal even for the top bands.  Once the piece is worked up, and has been polished under a fine MD, it becomes something wonderful and worth the extra effort.

A short processional fanfare - around 1:30 - for brass band. Written for the University of West London for use in graduation ceremonies. Labelled as a 'fanfare by a common man' this is a self-reflective piece. A reminder to be proud of the things I achieve, big and small.

I. Tributaries
II. Memorial Song
III. Bridges to the Sky

Pittsburgh Rhapsody (2008) for brass band was commissioned by the River City Brass
Band, Denis Colwell, music director, in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the
city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with support from the Pittsburgh 250 Community
Connections Committee.

The first movement, Tributaries, is inspired by Pittsburgh as a city of three rivers and
particularly the confluence of two rivers to form one. Throughout the movement
there are a number of places where two ideas converge to become one. Opening with
a fanfare-like gesture, the music then becomes more flowing before building up again
to a climax.

The second movement, Memorial Song, is a lyrical duet for flugelhorn and euphonium.
The movement was not conceived as a specific memorial, but its lyrical and elegiac
mood represents the many memorials that we all celebrate, both personal and
corporate.

The third movement, Bridges to the Sky, celebrates Pittsburgh as a city of bridges. The
music takes inspiration from the sense of exhilaration that one can get driving amidst
the post-industrial landscape of roads, flyovers, bridges, and hills.
